My Dog Really Hates Me Because…

…Why Modern Day Canine Kazoos are a Must (Even if the Dog Disagrees)

Owner’s Perspective

Everyone loves a party. At least, that’s what I thought. But apparently, to my big-hearted basset hound, Rocky, not every type of party paraphernalia is appreciated. You see, the other day I brought home some new toys from The Hungry Puppy; among them: a shiny dog-friendly kazoo.

Now, to put things into context, the idea was born out of necessity. Rocky’s older now and doesn’t run around the house like he used to. I wanted to spice up his playtime, make it more interesting for him (and admittedly, a lot more amusing for me). And what could be more fun than turning our weekday evenings into a riotous hootenanny with Rocky leading the melody?

We started off slow. I blew softly into the kazoo — nothing less than a symphony of a squeak reverberated around the room. Rocky’s ears twitched. His eyes went wide. He tilted his head in a way that screamed, “Is this sorcery?” And when I presented the instrument of sound (or “torture,” I suppose) to him for a closer look, he begrudgingly sniffed the kazoo, eyed me with a skeptical squint, then slowly backed away, his tail going down in protest. Needless to say, my heart broke a little.

Rocky’s Perspective

Listen, I like parties. Sure. What I don’t like are unannounced auditions for ‘Dogs Got Talent.’ Let me explain: I was minding my own business, having an intense face-off with Mr. Squirrel at the window, when out of nowhere, she ruined an otherwise peaceful afternoon with that WRETCHED BOOMBOX OF DESTRUCTION.

CAN YOU IMAGINE? One moment it’s quiet, the next it’s a full-blown concert. My ears! MY POOR EARS! They’re not made for this level of auditory assault. Dairy cows hear that kind of noise and give whipped cream instead of milk.

She nudged the thing towards me, the smirk on her face clear as day. Thought it would be cute, did she? And my response? Give her credit? FOR THIS ABSURDITY? No, thank you. I huffed in disgust, turned tail, and walked away. HER FACE. THE CONFUSION. Pricless.

Crisis Averted

Realizing my poor Rocky was no Mozart in the making, I knew I had to make amends. The sight of his big, droopy eyes, staring at me through the banisters of the stairs (his new favorite sulking spot), got to me. I couldn’t let him think he was living in a house policed by the canine version of Simon Cowell. So, back to The Hungry Puppy we went.

This time, the answer was obvious — a good old-fashioned squeaky toy. I selected the most humorous one — a plush design of a guitar. At least this way, Rocky could enjoy playtime without the noise trauma.

When we got home, and Rocky saw the plush guitar, his tail soared like a flag in the wind. He grabbed his new toy, did a happy dance around the room before finally settling down, the corners of the guitar peeking out from his mouth. Squeaky toy to the rescue!

Crisis averted. Earplugs unnecessary. Dog no longer hates me (for now, until next new idea).
