Owner’s Perspective
‘Tis the season to be cozy. That’s what I told myself. That’s what I whispered to my credit card as I bought the cutest Christmas sweater for Bella. It was green and red with jingling bells and even had a spot for her tail to be comfortable.
Bella has short hair, and the vet warned me about winter chills. My intention was, in all honesty, to look after her well-being. Plus, admit it, dogs in holiday outfits are nothing short of adorable (and the Instagram likes agree).
I washed it according to instructions, I swear. I checked the tag three times (okay, fine, four times) to ensure I didn’t shrink it. But, much to my disbelief, this elf-sized garment greeted me from the drier.
Bella looked at the sweater, then at me, and let out a sigh. Her tail stopped wagging, ears flattened, and she retreated to her bed. It was a clear “you’ve betrayed me” moment. Guilt started creeping in.
Bella’s Perspective: The Shrunken Disaster
The human thought she was clever. Bella, on the other hand, has been through nearly a dozen winters and knows how to deal. Don’t they know fur has its functions?
The anticipation was building. The warm, soft fabric brushed against my skin, an armor against winter. THE SWEATER. It was time. The warmth! The jingling bells! The tail space! Everything was PERFECT!
Until she held up that shriveled lump of wool that was supposed to be my brand new Christmas sweater. Wait, WHAT? She SHRUNK it? The tail hole was barely a thumb-hole now.
The human had failed. This was a BETRAYAL. How could she DO this? Winters are harsh for us short-haired dogs and trust me, nothing compensates a warm cozy sweater. NOTHING! I turned away, couldn’t bear to look at the sorry excuse of a sweater.
Mending Bella’s Broken Trust
My heartbreak was no less than Bella’s. The sad eyes and the continuous sighing were more than I could bear. It was time to fix things. So, I grabbed my keys, called The Hungry Puppy, and ordered Bella’s favourite – a proper, fitting, and brand new Christmas sweater.
Crisis Averted Christmas Spirit Restored
When I handed Bella the new sweater from The Hungry Puppy, her eyes lit up. She wagged her tail so fast, you would think it was the helicopter’s tail rotor. I put the new, perfectly-fitting sweater on her, and she pranced around, showing off her jingling bells with pride and joy.
The trust was restored, love rekindled. Crisis averted. Bella has a properly fitting Christmas Sweater now. Dog no longer hates me (as long as the laundry is outsourced).
