The Owner’s Perspective
This morning, I decided to test an essential command – the “drop it.” I thought I had trained my lovely Max just right. I was confident, Max was obedient, what could possibly go wrong? (A valid question, if you’ve never actually owned a dog before.)
So, let’s set the scene. Max has his favorite ball. It’s bright orange, squeaky, and slightly chewed on one side. It’s the kind of ball only a dog could love (and trust me, if you saw it, you’d agree). His eyes are excited, his tail is like a tiny furry windmill, and, for one glorious moment, all is right with the universe.
The game begins innocently enough. We’re playing fetch, Max is loving it, I’m feeling like the world’s best dog owner, then I say those fateful words… “Drop it, Max.” The tail stops wagging. The world, I am fairly certain, stops rotating. Max merely stares at me with a look that says, “Are you joking right now?”
This point in the story is where any decent dog owner would take a step back, right? But no, not me. I pushed. I repeated the command. Oh, the betrayal in those puppy-dog eyes. I ended our fetch game and earned myself a one-way ticket to guilt town.
Max’s Comments
Let me set something straight. I LOVE MY BALL. It’s perfect. The squeak, the chewing texture, it’s my definition of bliss. So, when we started our daily game of fetch, I was in DOG HEAVEN. Then comes the unthinkable.
She uttered the words. “Drop it, Max,” she said. DROP IT? This special toy that you’ve given me, that we’re enjoying together, you want me to just… surrender it? Nonsense! In my shock, I simply froze. Surely, she didn’t mean it. Surely, she understood the bond between dog and squeaky ball.
But alas, she did. She said it again. “Drop it.” Can you believe the audacity? I, of course, did the only self-respecting act. I turned away, ball firmly in mouth. She might have believed she was still in control. But there’s no control without respect.
Crisis Averted
So there I was, in the dog house, the proverbial tail tucked between my legs. I looked at Max, still holding his sacred squeaky ball, though the joy was gone. The fun was over. My heart couldn’t handle it.
I did the only thing a desperate dog-parent could do. I grabbed my car keys, and headed straight for The Hungry Puppy. I knew the solution: a new squeaky ball. Not just any squeaky ball – the KONG Squeezz Ball. Renowned for its erratic bounce and rewarded squeaks, it was the perfect apology toy.
I’ll never forget Max’s face when I brought out the new, shiny KONG Squeezz Ball from the Hungry Puppy bag. He dropped the old ball instantly. I guess “drop it” does work after all! His tail was a whirlwind of excitement and his eyes sparkled with delight. He might not forget my command faux pas, but the new squeaky ball sure bought his forgiveness.
Crisis averted. Trust restored. Dog no longer hates me (especially when new toys are involved).
