The Owner’s Side

It started innocently enough. There was something irresistibly cute about my pup, Rocky, darting around the house with one of my socks clutched in his jaws. He’d nose out a lone, abandoned sock (the third one from a pair, if you know what I mean), and the game was on — a wild, sock-filled adventure that spread from the living room to the backyard.

But one day, the sock game changed. Life had gotten busy, and I found myself sitting at the kitchen table, staring mournfully at my half-paired socks. I looked at the mismatched pile, sighed, and told Rocky, “Buddy, I think we need a break from the sock game. We’re missing too many pairs.” His ears wilted just a bit. I felt guilty but resolved.

I started corralling my socks — keeping them up high, away from Rocky’s excited gaze. And I began noticing the change. His tail wagged a bit slower, his barks at the mail carrier a bit softer, his puppy eyes a bit more haunted (or maybe that was just my guilty imagination?). I hated it. By the time I caught him continually snuffling at the new, dog-proof sock storage, my heart was breaking.

Rocky’s Rendition

Socks. I loved those SOCKS. At first, they were just these odd fabric things lying around. But then, I discovered the JOY they held! The CHASE. The VICTORY. And the unique human FOOT smell that drove me wild. I lived for sock hunting.

And then, it all CHANGED. The socks disappeared. My human, who I thought LOVED ME, hid them from me. Betrayal. That’s what it felt like. Raw, heart-aching, sockless BETRAYAL.

I mean, what is a dog to do? I sniffed. I searched. I gave my best, soppy, ‘Where, oh where, are my socks?’ eyes. Nothing. Just a sad whiff of my beloved foot perfume elusively out of my reach.

Crisis Averted

I couldn’t bear it. Rocky’s sad eyes were my undoing. I couldn’t deprive him of the joy he got from my ‘(not-so-freshly) laundered, somehow always missing a pair’ socks. But I also couldn’t afford to run out of socks. I needed a solution, and fast.

The sock game could retire, leaving behind legendary tales in Rocky’s world. And I, once again, was the BEST human from his perspective.

Crisis averted. Socks safe. Dog no longer hates me (and I have an abundance of unmatched socks to prove it)
