Owner’s Perspective
Piling the boxes in the middle of the living room seemed like the ideal solution at that moment. Clearing out the garage had turned into a bigger task than I had anticipated (when does it ever go as planned, right?) and the sweet local company I found for decluttering services could only schedule me in for the coming weekend. Until then, I figured my precious retriever, Rufus, would love the new addition, always a fan of unexpected things to sniff and explore.
Famous last words.
Rufus stepped cautiously into the room, his nose twitching and bushy tail wagging in anticipation. He approached the boxes, sniffed them from top to bottom. His wagging tail slowed, and then stopped. He stared at me for a seemingly infinite second, his big brown eyes filled to the brim with betrayal. It wasn’t the heart-melting ‘I’ll get over it’ kind of betrayal. No, sir. This was the ‘We need to talk about this serious situation’ kind.
Rufus Ruminates
Outrage! A sea of boxes dumped in MY territory. MY living room. I was looking forward to my mid-day nap, but instead, I encounter OBSTACLES. Today was NOT supposed to be agility training day.
I had been outside securing the yard, surveying the fence line, doing my JOB. And my reward? An INTRUSION! My favorite corner, my mid-day nap spot, now taken over by monstrosities smelling of dust and who knows what else. WHAT ELSE?
I admit it, curiosity flirted with the edge of my nerves. I sniffed, I poked, I even put on my bravest front and tried clambering over one. But let me tell you, these monstrosities are craftier than they look. Slippery and unstable. My dignity trembled on a scary edge.
I gave my human my well-practiced ‘let’s-talk’ gaze. It has worked for fewer tragedies, but apparently, this time, she thought it was CUTE.
Unbelievable! How quickly a dog’s life turns from peace to chaos.
Happy Ending: Agility Averted
The novelty of my pup’s predicament lost its charm pretty quickly. Rufus, after his initial exploration and failed attempts at climbing, decided on a sit-out protest right in the center of the room. His deep, soulful sighs as I passed by were enough to finally tip the scales.
“Alright, Rufus, I’ve got it,” I sighed myself, scooping up my laptop to send a desperate email for an express schedule to the decluttering services team. During our little wait, a trip to The Hungry Puppy felt like a warranted apology for my companion’s inconvenience.
Their puzzle toys were always Rufus’s favorite. This time I picked out a new toy from Outward Hound — an intriguing ‘Hide-a-Squirrel’ squirrels-in-a-tree-trunk puzzle. Interactive playtime seemed like just the ticket to distract Rufus from the temporary encroachments at home.
The moment Rufus saw the toy, his ears perked up. His tail starting wagging like a frantic metronome. Gone were the betrayal eyes and on came the playful puppy mode. The prospect of finding hidden squirrels, freeing them, and then doing it all over again was endlessly entertaining.
By the evening, the decluttering team confirmed an earlier slot. The boxes were soon to be gone, but more importantly, Rufus had successfully rescued all the squirrels at least seventeen times. He was sprawled out, panting happily next to his new toy, occasionally giving me glances of what seemed like reinstated trust.
Crisis averted. Chaos conquered by squirrels. Dog no longer hates me (well, at least until the next home project).
