The Dog Owner’s Perspective
I thought I knew my dog, Max. I thought I knew what he liked, what he absolutely despised (like those dreaded nail trimmings), and what he tolerated with the patience of a saint (those darn squirrels in the backyard).
But it turned out I misunderstood something fundamental about his taste palette. This realization hit me like a load of bricks when I brought home a new bag of dog food — a different brand I decided to try out after hearing rave reviews from my dog-owning friends. I was positive Max would appreciate the change. He’d been on the same kibble for ages and surely, a bit of variety would be good for his taste buds, or so I convinced myself (and Max).
Max’s reaction was baffling. From the moment I poured that new kibble into his bowl, his eager wagging tail slowed to a cautiously optimistic swish. He sniffed his dinner, gave me ‘those’ eyes – the kind you’d see on a child realizing Santa isn’t real – and took a couple of steps back. It was as though I betrayed his gastronomical trust (if that’s even a thing).
The rest of the night, anytime I approached him, he’d squint at me as if I let him down. His normal bouncy self was replaced by a sulking, betrayed doggo who couldn’t understand why his human would commit such an unthinkable crime. To say I was guilt-ridden and confused would be an understatement.
Max’s Observations on the Matter
I saw her coming in with the bag. I heard the rustling that sings the song of dinner time. The tail was wagon. The nose was sniffin’. I was READY.
Then it hit me. The smell wasn’t the same. It wasn’t MY kibble. MY dinner. MY warm satisfaction after a long day of squirrel watching and playing fetch.
And then — the ultimate BETRAYAL. I was served the new, intruder food that dared to replace MY KIBBLE. I sniffed it, hoping — praying — it was a mistake. A HORRIFIC mistake.
But it wasn’t. No familiar crunch, no delightful aroma, no comforting glow of my favorite dinner waiting for me. Just a pile of deceit, mocking me from my own bowl.
I’m not, I repeat, NOT being dramatic. MY TRUST WAS SHATTERED. The night was long and full of sighs. Deep, loud sighs.
How Peace Was Restored
Max’s silent treatment was killing me. I missed the wagging tail and the eager beaming eyes. I felt like a traitor. A dog owner who betrayed her dog’s trust and love over kibble! Something had to be done.
I grabbed my car keys, determined to bring back that wagging tail and the boundless love Max had for his meal times. And I knew just the place to go — The Hungry Puppy.
From their wide array of top-quality dog food brands, I picked up a bag of Max’s tried and true favorite – Sportsman’s Pride FieldMaster. It was a sight for sore eyes and I knew Max would feel the same.
The moment I walked in the door with that bag, Max’s snout twitched. The familiar aroma of his beloved kibble, the one REAL KIBBLE, filled the room. When the first pieces hit his bowl, he nearly knocked me over in his hurry to get to them. The crunching noise filled the house and my heart. I was back in his good graces!
Crisis averted. Trust restored. Dog no longer hates me (until the next kibble incident).
