Owner’s Perspective
We all have moments in our lives when we’re convinced we’re the next Mariah Carey. It usually happens when our favorite tunes play, and we just can’t help but unleash the songbird within. I had that moment last Saturday afternoon, showering with the entire house to myself (or so I thought), belting out the classics with the confidence of a five-time Grammy winner.
You know those songs—the ones you can’t listen to without breaking into some heartfelt, passionate action, regardless of who’s watching or listening (or not). I mean, who could resist the overpowering allure of Bohemian Rhapsody! I was in the moment, headbanging along to the tune, one hand clutching my imaginary microphone, the other an equally imaginary guitar.
But then, like Newton’s apple falling abruptly, reality hit me alongside a sorrowful whine from Buster. His mournful eyes, those big brown orbs eternally pleading for mercy. And that tail—the normally waggling beacon of joy—resting limply between his legs. He stared at me, head slightly turned, like I’d just committed the biggest betrayal in the history of dog-kind. I winced, my heart breaking at the realization.
It was an unwelcome epiphany. Apparently, Buster didn’t perceive my dulcet tones quite the same way I did.
Buster Breaks the Hard Truth
Okay, folks, let’s get this straight. I’m a dog. That means I have SUPERHUMAN HEARING. That’s my superpower, right up there alongside my adorable looks and tail-wagging charisma. So, when SHE burst into SONG, I felt every. single. note.
One moment, I was living the dream—soft rug under my paws, the smell of a half-eaten sandwich slowly drifting my way, blissfully meditative. THE NEXT, I found myself in the middle of a NEVERENDING sound… ummm… experience.
“IT’S HORRIBLE,” I howled to no one in particular, trying to make my DISTRESS known. Ears back, tail tucked. BUT WHAT’S WORSE, She just KEPT SINGING, unaware of my ANGUISH!!! She had taken my peaceful afternoon and turned it into AN OPERA OF DISCORD!
Once the noise—that I wouldn’t dignify by calling ‘music’—subsided, I turned and gave her the look. You know—the innocent, heartbreaking stare of a dog LET DOWN. I felt some satisfaction when guilt crept onto her face. It was a small victory.
The Happy Ending
The remorse in her eyes was palpable. It was like someone had slapped her with a wet kibble. A moment of shock, then realization echoed in her eyes. She finally understood. She had committed a grave mistake, and it was time to make amends.
To her credit, she DIDN’T HESITATE. She scooped me up, doing her best to give me an apology cuddle. Although I appreciated the effort, I was still nursing my eardrums. The real relief came when she grabbed her keys, strapped me into my leash, and announced, “We’re going for a ride, Buster.”
Before I knew it, we were at The Hungry Puppy. I recognized it from the smell alone—my favorite place, a sanctum of tasty treats and endless joy. She picked up my absolute favorites—freeze-dried Stella & Chewy’s Duck Duck Goose Dinner Patties—a delightful treat full of crunchy goodness that always makes my tail wag.
The moment I got the first bite, I forgave her. My tail started wagging, my ears perked, and my mood instantly lifted. She gave me a pat on the head, smiling down at me, whispering another miniature apology for her tone-deaf tunes.
Crisis averted. Eardrums healed. Dog no longer hates me (unless there’s a rerun of the impromptu concert).
