Owner’s Perspective
Okay, so here’s what happened: it was just another regular morning in the dog park. Luna, my tireless terrier, was hyped, I was sleep-deprived, the sun was shining. Everything was going as planned until they showed up – The Squirrels. It seemed like an army, casting their dramatic shadow over the grounds as they descended from the trees, their bushy tails twitching ominously in the morning sun, their tiny paws making a ballet of movement over the grass (it would’ve been cute if it didn’t end so drastically for me).
I did what any sensible person does when confronted with a squirrel army; I scooped up Luna and retreated to the safety of our home. My thought process was simple; save Luna from the potential squirrel havoc, save the squirrels from the relentless Luna. We were making a hasty retreat, and apart from a little twitch in her tail, Luna seemed okay with the plan. That is, until we got home.
As I put Luna down, expecting the usual butt-wiggle and kiss attack, what I got instead was a deep, resonant sigh, followed by a pair of you’re-the-worst-owner-ever eyes. The betrayal was evident in her downturned ears and tucked tail.
I was devastated. I had just denied Luna her fun-filled, squirrel-chasing, cardio intensive morning and the guilt was overwhelming.
Luna’s Lament
It was PARK DAY. My favorite day. I’ve been twirling in excitement since I woke up. My tail was READY. My paws were READY. Then we COULD NOT BELIEVE what happened next. It was like a MOVIE, a blockbuster hits. A squirrel invasion!
I know I am known to chase one or maybe two squirrels but an ENTIRE PACK OF THEM? An opportunity of a LIFETIME. But NO. My human, she, of all people, grabbed me and raced home. What she calls a ‘PROTECTIVE SWOOP’ was sincerely a THEFT of my once in a dog life adventure. I couldn’t believe it.
She betrayed me. Denied me of my epic squirrel-buster adventure.
Crisis Averted
My guilt-ridden heart couldn’t bear the Luna’s silent treatment. With every muffled sigh, every averted gaze, my guilt grew. I needed to fix things. I needed to get back in Luna’s good books. So I grabbed my keys, dialed up The Hungry Puppy, and decided for the ultimate apology – a haul of new toys.
At The Hungry Puppy, I picked up a selection of Luna’s favorite puzzle toys. These were no ordinary toys; they were models of squirrels. I could have sworn the employee at the store was trying to smother a smile when I explained my situation.
Once back home, I handed each toy to Luna. She sniffed each one with a curious gaze before giving a soft bark of approval. With a wag of her tail and sparkle in her eye, she sat by my side, her favorite squirrel puzzle toy in her mouth.
Crisis averted. Apology accepted. Dog no longer hates me (hopefully, no squirrel army invades anytime soon)
