My Dog Really Hates Me Because…

… The Unexpected Downpour: A Tale of Raincoats and Regret

Owner’s Perspective
It started as a beautiful sunny day; the kind perfect for a walk in the park. So, that’s what Bella and I had planned. But plans have a funny way of changing. And change it did — the weather took a turn, and so did my day.

We were halfway through our walk when the drizzle began. It seemed harmless enough, until it wasn’t. I’m not talking about a shower here. It was a full-blown downpour. Like, out-of-nowhere, cats-and-dogs kind of rain. And I wasn’t prepared.

But hope wasn’t entirely lost. I had Bella’s raincoat tucked away in her leash bag. (Yes, she has a raincoat, and yes, she hates it.) But desperate times called for desperate, and slightly cruel, measures. So, I hurriedly put it on her, hoping it would be over quickly.

Bella looked at me with a betrayal in her eyes I hadn’t seen before. And there I was, standing in the rain, feeling guilty for doing what I thought was best and protecting her from being drenched. But all she saw was a brightly colored betrayal and me as the villain. Ouch.

Bella Breaks it Down
WE. WERE. ON. A. WALK. A perfect, sunny, tail-wagging, park-smelling WALK. And then SHE ruined it.

The sky started doing its big cry thing. Fine. A little water never hurt a bulldog. But then …

SHE REACHED FOR THE COAT. My heart sank. The dreaded, patronising, degrading, colorfully unbearable COAT. She knows I DETEST it.

She paused, met my eyes, but did it anyway. She’s NEVER done that before. It was awful. She saw exactly how much I hated it and ignored my feelings entirely! Don’t I have dog rights? Does my opinion not count?

I spent the remaining walk – if you can call it that – trying not to feel the coat on my fur. IT WAS TERRIBLE! But I soldiered on. Dramatically, of course. But she didn’t even notice.

Crisis Averted
I couldn’t bear it. The guilt was eating at me. If Bella were a kid, she’d probably not talk to me for days. Shivering under the blanket of regret and her bright raincoat, I made a decision. My dog was not going to hate me over a raincoat.

I grabbed my keys, ordered Bella’s favorite bacon strips and a new toy from The Hungry Puppy. They’ve got this great express delivery option, because sometimes you need to make up for your monumental mistakes immediately.

When the delivery arrived, Bella’s demeanor changed. From the sad, sulky, raincoat-wearing dog, she transformed into a tail-wagging, excited, raincoat-hating dog. The moment she saw the bacon strips, she actually SMILED. She didn’t care that her fur was still damp or that the dreaded coat was still (partially) on her.

She wiggled out of the coat, and in that moment, all was right with the world again. The coat lay discarded, and Bella, munching happily on her bacon strips, seemed to forgive me. And just like that, the coat debacles seemed like a distant memory.

Redemption. Raincoat Stigma Shed. Dog no longer hates me (for now).
