The Owner’s Side
I prided myself on having a well-stocked treat jar. Spoiling Buster, my lovable golden retriever, is one of life’s small joys. But yesterday, I committed a heinous crime of neglect: I let the treat jar run empty. Our sacred ritual was broken, and apparently… so was Buster’s trust.
Here’s my defense: it was an innocent oversight! Work has been crazy, and time lost its meaning. But Buster doesn’t understand mergers and acquisitions. He understands the crinkle of the treat bag. The delicious aroma wafting from the jar when I lift the lid. And last night, instead of a symphony of joyous sounds, there was silence (and a hollow echo). As I flapped the empty bag, Buster gave me a look of unimaginable betrayal.
You know the one. The ‘you have starved me my entire life’ eyes. It’s like he had practiced the look in advance, knowing the day would come when I, the trusted provider of treats and belly rubs, would fail him egregiously. There was no wagging tail. Just a mournful look, a heavy sigh, and a slow retreat to his bed.
Buster Tells the Real Story
COOKIES. I heard it. Clear as day. Out comes the COOKIE JAR. My tail goes into overdrive. I know what comes next. Slowly, SLOWLY, she reaches into the bag. But then…
NOTHING.
No sweet smell of beefy delight. No crinkly sound of happiness. NOTHING. Just an EMPTY bag. How is this possible? And then the worst part — she puts THE EMPTY JAR back down.
What. Just. Happened?
I mean, I HAVE NOTHING. Who does this to someone they “love”? The disappointment was palpable. I was struck speechless. All I could do was retreat to my bed, lay down, face the wall, and sigh audibly every few minutes. You know, just to remind her of her failures.
The Redemption
During the night, I lay awake listening to his disappointed sighs. His pain was too much to bear. In the silent darkness, the guilt powered me into action.
By dawn, I was already on the phone with The Hungry Puppy. Knowing the gravity of my crime, express delivery was the only way to go. I needed redemption, and fast. I ordered a fresh supply of Buster’s favorite all-natural bully sticks. I could almost hear the satisfying crunch as Buster would sink his teeth into them.
As the delivery arrived, Buster perked up, tail cautiously wagging. The moment I opened the bag of new bully sticks, a peace settled over Buster’s accusing eyes. Barely pausing to achieve a firm grip on the treat, he retreated to his favorite spot, devouring the bully stick with a satisfied crunch.
And just like that, with each happy wag of Buster’s tail, my sins were forgiven.
Crisis averted. Belly rubs resumed. Dog no longer hates me (until the treat jar dangerously depletes again).
