The Owner’s Side
Motherhood teaches you to embrace the bizarre miracles of life, like how a tiny rubber ball can bring endless joy to a furball. So when The Hungry Puppy included a set of temporary tattoos in our goodie bag, I laughed it off, promising to give it to our neighbors’ kids (since they’re the human kind and not the canine sort). That’s what I told my neighbor. That’s what I told my son. That’s what I told my dog Bella, who was listening with one ear cocked and eyes rounder than her favorite squeaky ball.
I didn’t mean to open the whole Pandora’s Box (or rather, toy basket). All I wanted was to get the squeaky ball from the bottom. As I emptied the basket, out rolled the forgotten tattoos. It all happened in a split second – Bella snatched the tattoos playfully, thinking they were a new form of chewable happiness.
Her eyes lit up as she took it into her mouth, throwing it in the air and catching it, wagging her tail so hard you’d think she’d just won the doggy lottery. But then, she dropped it and nudged it towards me, her seal-like eyes begging me to join the game. You know those eyes, the “you’re my best friend and playmate” eyes.
Bella’s Dramatic Discourse
ONE MINUTE, I’m snoozing peacefully in my sunspot. The next, I smell it. NEW TOY. Not that stale old tennis ball. Not the rubber bone. BRAND NEW, un-chewed, un-drooled toy. I snatched it up with the precision of a seasoned hunter and saluted the Toy Gods for their mercy. It was THE BEST DAY EVER.
I tested it — soft to chew, convenient to carry, great for toss and catch. This was the real deal. I was onto something extraordinary. Then disaster struck. MY HUMAN TOOK IT AWAY! No more toss. No more catch. No more chewing. Just NOTHING. My newfound joy snatched away in an instant.
I stared at my owner in disbelief. I was no longer a puppy, but had I not proved my worth? Did the years of catching balls mid-air mean nothing? I held my ground, erect and unblinking, staring at my adversary. Heartbreak shadowed every nook and cranny of my once joyful world. The silence in the room was deafening.
Crisis Averted
I had pushed it too far. Bella wouldn’t budge, and her toys lay neglected. Her silent protest echoing louder than any bark. I couldn’t bear it. Unable to withstand the accusing eyes, I fumbled for my phone and dialed The Hungry Puppy. My vocabulary failed me as I tried explaining the absurdity to their consultant on the line. They were patient, somehow understanding my mumbling, advising a bag of Bacon Flavor Benebones — a new kind of chew toy that would hopefully act as a peace offering to my dejected dog.
When I walked in, Bella scarcely raised an eyebrow. Her tail, a sad stump barely twitching. Then I unveiled the Benebones. Her sniffing escalated to excited snorts and impatient pawing. I tore open the packet and handed her the bacon-infused toy. The transformation was immediate.
Bella took to the Benebone like a heartbroken diva to a tub of the finest ice cream. With each determined gnaw and happy prance around the living room, forgiveness washed over us. The house echoed with the music of Bella’s satisfied grunts and the rhythmic gnawing at the Benebone.
Crisis averted. Benebone brought peace. Dog no longer hates me (but I might hide the temporary tattoos better next time)
