Owner’s Perspective

Sundays are park days. Always have been. At least, until last weekend. I decided that the laundry, which had been piling up for days, needed to be tackled. The weather wasn’t that great anyway (a pitiful attempt at justifying my decision to myself). It looked like it was going to rain, and my favorite sweatshirt was somewhere in that laundry mountain.

“What’s one missed park day?” I reasoned to myself, hoping against hope that Charlie – our Golden Retriever – wouldn’t take it to heart. “He’s not even a fan of the rain” I told myself, fetching the laundry basket. Little did I know, a storm was brewing inside the house!

Charlie, upon seeing me busying myself with the laundry, immediately realized something was amiss. His tail, which was usually a footer-tapping metronome on park days, dropped. His signature “let’s get going” wag was noticeably absent. It was only when he retreated to his bed in a huff, directing at me the saddest dog-eyes you’d ever see, did the weight of what I’d done hit me.

Charlie’s Take on the Situation

MISSING PARK DAY? I couldn’t believe it. I saw the clouds, I knew there might be rain, but since when has that stopped us? A little bit of rain never hurt anyone, especially not me. I’ve been waiting all week for THIS. Park day – the BEST day!

I was excited. Woke up early. Did my stretches. Where’s my leash? Where’s my ball? Why does she have the laundry basket? What’s happening? WHY ISN’T SHE GRABBING THE LEASH?

That’s when it hit me, we’re not going. NO PARK DAY? Betrayal. Shock. Disappointment. Heartbreak. I thought she knew how much I valued our trips to the park. It’s the highlight of my week. Clearly, I’ve been living a lie.

I did the only thing one can do in such dire circumstances. I dramatically lumbered back to my bed, giving her my best gloomy eyes. I sighed heavily, turned away, and contemplated the profound injustice of it all.

Redemption Approaches

At that moment, heart-wrenching guilt washed over me. Here was Charlie, the best and most patient dog, stuck inside the house and missing his most cherished trip to the park. Enough was enough. I decided to fix this.

Crisis averted. My sweatshirt can wait. Dog no longer hates me (until the next laundry day).
