Owner’s Story
It was just meant to be a little harmless fun — a little fetch in the backyard after dinner as we do most nights. With a laugh and a cheerful “go get it!” I whipped the ball high into the air, at which point Baxter, my patient and well-trained Border Collie, sprinted off.
But then I heard it. That dreaded sound — the ringtone of an incoming work email. I dared to check my phone, rationalizing that Baxter was busy chasing the ball, after all (an important meeting, undeniably, in the canine world).
However, the email was more than just a quick “check-in”. I found myself tangled in a last-minute work crisis that demanded my immediate attention. “Just five minutes,” I promised Baxter, who was eagerly awaiting the next pitch. Then five minutes turned into ten, and ten into an hour.
Finally, I looked up from my phone to see my dog just sitting there, the ball discarded by his paws. The anticipation had morphed into an unmistakable look of disappointment. And his tail, that previously vigorous metronome of joy, was now still. A pit formed in my stomach — I broke our playtime ritual and it looked like my dog was thoroughly disappointed.
Baxter’s Bitterness:
I was READY. I had stretched. I had limbered up. It was TIME for the BEST part of the day.
She said FETCH. She threw the BALL. I chased it. A classic game, an honored tradition — always a highlight of my day!
Then came that BEEP. The small rectangle of DISTRACTION. She STARTED TYPING. One minute went by. Then TWO. Then THREE. I waited. And waited. But still, she didn’t THROW THE BALL.
Excuse me? Is that rectangle MORE important than our bond of PLAY and FUN? Does she not understand that fetch isn’t just a game, it’s an indispensable part of my day? I stared at her, hoping maybe she would understand my silent plea. But NO.
I laid down, ball by my side, watching her frantically tapping that rectangle. With every passing moment, my tail went stiller. A dog can only take so much disrespect before he starts to feel like his beloved fetch is nothing more than a casualty on the battlefield of neglect.
Resolution
The silent treatment was tough. Every whimpered sigh from Baxter felt like a punch. That abandoned ball seemed like a piece of evidence against me in a court of canine justice. “Alright, buddy,” I said, grabbing my keys with newfound resolve. “Let’s fix this.”
I drove to The Hungry Puppy, determined to make it up to Baxter. I bought a new interactive play toy — a Crazy Bumpin’ Ball. It moved unpredictably when touched, promising hours of independent play. And for good measure, I picked up a packet of his favorite freeze-dried lamb treats too.
When I got home, the house was silent, Baxter still at his vigil above the discarded ball. But the moment I showed him the Crazy Bumpin’ Ball, his ears perked up. When I nudged it and it started moving unpredictably, a familiar gleam returned to his eyes. I scattered a few freeze-dried treats around it, prompting an abrupt end to his silent treatment.
Happy Ending
As Baxter leaped and barked around the Bumpin’ Ball in sheer joy, it was quite a sight to behold. He loved it — and he loved me again.
Crisis averted. Fetch still possible, in a different style. Dog no longer hates me (regular fetch schedule resumes tomorrow).
