Owner’s Perspective
Okay, so here’s the story. Let’s just say I have a friend who recently got a puppy (yeah, I know — crazy cute!). Now, being the dog-obsessed person that I am, I obviously head over to meet the little bundle of joy. I played with her, rolled on the grass, got a face full of wet puppy kisses, and absorbed the undeniable, inky aroma of fresh puppy (you’d be lying if you said you didn’t love it).
As much as I was living in the moment of floppy ears and soft paws, there was one thing I forgot – I didn’t account for Rosie’s adorable little scent sticking to me like a bad habit (I swear it’s like the puppy version of glitter). But the real issue arose when I got home to my own dog, Buster.
The moment Buster caught a whiff of me, I knew I was in trouble. Cue the raised ears, tilted head, and protruding nose. I saw his little heart break right in front of me as he cowered away and went straight to his bed, not even coming out for dinner.
Buster’s Breakdown
ALRIGHT. So I was chilling at home, counting down the minutes till dinner, when my human walks through the door. BUT SOMETHING WAS OFF. She smelled…different. Like Wet Nose Woe and Heartbreak Hound mixed with a dash of Betrayal Biscuit.
At first, I thought it was some sort of cruel joke. MAYBE a new perfume or something. But, no way. This wasn’t SOME SCENT from a bottle. THIS WAS REAL PUPPY.
Excuse me? EXCUSE ME? Wasn’t I enough anymore? Was my fur not soft enough? My wag not enthralling enough? These questions flooded my mind as I turned my back to her. There was only so much a dog’s heart could take.
The Happy Ending
Seeing Buster so upset was enough to melt my heart and I realized it was time to make things right. Turning to The Hungry Puppy, I picked out Buster’s absolute favorite — a Premium Sportsman’s Pride FieldMaster kibble, high-quality fare that always brought the twinkle back into Buster’s eyes.
The moment I cracked open the bag, I saw a small flicker of hope light up in Buster’s eyes. Sniffing the air, his ears perked up, and before I knew it, Buster was at my feet, tail wagging, and ready for mealtime.
Hand-feeding him his favorite meal, I could see the forgiveness in his soulful eyes. The evening ended with Buster curled up next to me, the tension of betrayal comfortingly replaced with the melody of contented snoring.
Crisis averted. Betrayal dispelled. Dog no longer hates me (the power of high-quality kibble)
