My Dog Really Hates Me Because…

…The Saga of a Missed Morning Walk: An Epic Betrayal

The Owner’s Side of Things

Have you ever had one of those mornings? You know, where the alarm clock fails to meet expectations, the coffee maker decides to “brew” an abstract form of art instead of your life fuel, and you’re running late for an absolutely non-negotiable meeting first thing. This was my morning, last Tuesday. In the pandemonium that ensued, I made a decision I’d come to regret. I skipped Max’s morning walk.

I knew even then it was a mistake. The moment I grabbed my car keys instead of his leash, I felt it. But the clock on the wall was unforgiving, and my boss isn’t known for his empathetic nature or dog-friendly attitudes. “He’ll forgive me. He’s a dog,” I tried to console myself as I rushed out of the door (but does a heart know if it’s hound or human when it’s broken?).

Max didn’t throw a tantrum. No, Max’s disappointment was quiet yet powerful. He drooped, both his ears and tail giving away his heartache. Max wasn’t his usual bundle of joy at the sight of his breakfast either. No morning zoomies. No breakfast wiggling. Just an unusual, almost meditative stillness, like a philosopher contemplating the disappointments of life. I swear his mournful gaze followed me as I left, making me feel guiltier than a thief running away with stolen priceless art.

Max Has His Say

I’ve been up since 5:32 AM. Exactly. I have a routine, you see. Every morning, I give my humans a pawfect start. I offer up my dreamy eyes, my wags, and my uplifting spirit. Waiting for our morning walk is the crescendo of my dawn. It’s the sun that rises after the long, lonely night. It completes my universe.

But this day? THE WORST MORNING OF MY LIFE.

Do you know what it feels like to see your human grab their keys instead of your leash? It was a BETRAYAL of the highest order. The cold hard floor under my paws felt colder.

Was the whole world rushing for a meeting? Was the entire universe running late? Were they ALL prioritizing work over their faithful companions? I didn’t know. I only knew that I was left staring at a CLOSED DOOR. All I could do was sigh and give in to my sorrow, burying my face in my paws on my favorite spot on the couch.

The Redemption

I won’t deny it. Guilt hassled my mind. I mean, how could it not? Every worried glance my way, every heavy sigh, tore at my heart a little more (okay, fine, a lot more). As an act of contrition, I decided to take the guilt head-on. I realized that “sorry” wouldn’t cut it this time. So, after surviving what felt like the longest workday, I decided a visit to The Hungry Puppy was in order.

Their knowledgeable staff recommended the Primal freeze-dried treats, a combination of enticing flavors that I knew Max wouldn’t resist. After all, who can say no to salmon sashimi or venison sausages? They were packed with the good stuff, promising healthy nutrients along with satisfying taste.

Returning home, I opened the bag and the enticing aroma wafted through the room. Max, who had been giving me the ‘silent treatment,’ perked up. I’ve never seen him run that fast! His tail transformed into a windmill, spinning uncontrollably with pure joy. Each bite was met with tail wags, licks, and playful jumps. Max had returned, and my guilt was washed away with a flood of relief.

Crisis averted. Betrayal forgotten. Dog no longer hates me (until the next human mishap).
