The Owner’s Side:
I thought it would be a delightful surprise. I’d been cooped up at home for days, able to hear nothing but the ticking clock, and Max’s jingling collar. So one sunny afternoon, I decided to put on my gardening gloves and hobble outside to get some fresh air. And, in some form of misguided excitement, I decided to bring Max with me. You know, some fresh air, a bit of good old vitamin D…
“I’ve got it all figured out,” I assured myself. I’d tether Max to the tree in the yard, within sight of my gardening projects. A win-win situation: Max could get in some quality squirrel-watching, and I’d have a loyal audience for my subpar gardening efforts (you’d think I’d have gotten better with the lockdown). But as I tied his leash to the tree, I noticed his tail had stopped wagging. I convinced myself it was nothing—a minor disturbance in the canine world, perhaps. But one glance at his wide, pleading eyes, and I knew instantly. I had made a grave miscalculation. I’d left the rustic comfort of the living room and dragged him outside to the horrors of… insects.
Max was not a fan of the great outdoors. A disdain for the wild that developed seemingly overnight. He missed the comfort of fluffy cushions and the predictability of ceiling fans. Out here, the world was full of buzzing bees, flickering butterflies, and—worst of all—ants. Tiny, tough-to-spot ants that ventured far too close to his precious paws for comfort. His tail tucked underneath him, and he let out a small protest whine that shattered every dream of gardening alongside him.
Max’s Memoirs:
I don’t ask for much. A comfortable bed, a few treats now and then, and an adequate amount of belly rubs. That’s all. I never signed up for the wilderness. Not for the squirrels, and definitely not for the insects.
Just when I thought I’d settled comfortably into a pattern—nap, wake up, play, nap again—she decided to SPRING this surprise on me. And then came the greatest betrayal.
One minute, I’m lounging on my favorite spot on the couch; the next, she’s fastening my leash and leading me out the door. OUTDOORS. Under the clear blue sky, amidst the havoc of nature and the tyranny of insects. It was like one of those horror movies. Unpredictable. Terrifying.
She left me in this warzone, vulnerable and defenseless. No thanks to the flimsy leash that kept me from fleeing indoors. An open field for bees to buzz in my ears, for butterflies to flutter too close, and for ants—ANTS of all sizes—to march up to my desperate paws. MISERY. She abandoned me to the horrors of NATURE.
The Happy Ending:
I couldn’t ignore the crestfallen expression on Max’s face. The guilt got me. The poor little guy needed refuge, a symbol of indoor comfort to hold onto in the face of the fierce insects. The answer seemed obvious—Max needed his favorite chew toy, ‘Mr. Squeakers.’ A tool to distract him from the outdoor terror.
With a hurried sense of determination, I ran to The Hungry Puppy. I loaded up on an arsenal of dog-friendly distractions—treats, new chew toys, and a fresh replica of Mr. Squeakers. And thanks to their express delivery option, Max would soon have the comfort of familiar toys even amidst the ceremonious chaos of the back garden.
When I returned to the yard to find Max still wary of crawling critters, I held out the new Mr. Squeakers. His eyes lit up at the sight, and the retreat became a less terrifying ordeal with a piece of indoor comfort at hand. Ears perked up, tension eased somewhat, he grabbed Mr. Squeakers and traded his worried whines for content, playful grunts. The chew toy had saved the day.
Crisis averted. Chew toy restoring peace. Dog no longer hates me (as long as he remains an indoor canine).
