Owner’s Perspective

There I was, oblivious as can be, savouring every bite of my favorite double chocolate cherry ice cream. It was the kind of day when everything seemed brighter, and my only task was to lose myself in velvety bliss, one spoon at a time. It seemed like a harmless quest for comfort food (and perhaps a temporary remedy for a particularly tough day at work.)

But see, here’s the thing. As I sat there on my living room couch, relishing the ice cream, I saw something out of the corner of my eye. And by something, of course, I mean someone. My loyal companion, my partner in crime, bestowing upon me the most exaggerated puppy eyes. Max, my lovable, playful, and now seemingly offended Golden Retriever, was staring at me with that ‘I can’t believe you didn’t save me any’ look.

Now you might think, “Sharing your ice cream with your canine friend? That’s absurd!” or “Dogs and chocolate? That’s a big no-no!” And you’d be absolutely right. (Although I’d argue that Max doesn’t seem to comprehend these rules quite accurately.) But see his persuasion tactics, the wagging tail, the hope-filled eyes—it honestly felt like I’d just betrayed my best friend by keeping all the goodness to myself. I couldn’t exactly share my chocolate-loaded treat with him, but the guilt, oh the guilt!

Max’s Lament

She started eating it right in front of ME. I smelled it. I SAW it. It looked DELICIOUS. A dog’s nose knows these things. And let me just tell you, the smell was UNBEARABLE. It was right there, so close, yet so far, only inches away. An ETERNITY away.

What did I get? NOTHING. Absolutely NOTHING. She just sat there, staring into the distance, ignoring my EXEMPLARY display of self-restraint. I didn’t even try to snatch it, though I WAS tempted. I’m a gentleman. I can sit and wait. But did it matter? NOPE.

It was a TREAT, and TREATS are supposed to be SHARED. Isn’t that what best friends DO? Share EVERYTHING? But there I sat, my hopes for a taste of that sweet, sweet treat CRUSHED. BETRAYAL? Oh, yes. TOP LEVEL BETRAYAL. Such INJUSTICE will not be forgotten. WELL, let her enjoy her COLD, SWEET treat ALONE then.

The Happy Ending

My attempts to explain to Max why I couldn’t share my treat were predictably unsuccessful. That sad tilt of his head, a pitiful whimper was enough to shake my resolve. So I did the only thing I could do. I picked up my keys and headed for The Hungry Puppy.

But next time, remember, sharing is caring!”

Crisis Averted. Dog appeased. Owner no longer in the doghouse (although the ‘remember to share’ whine remains quite vivid).
