My Dog Really Hates Me Because…

…The Great Dog Tag Caper: A Reminder of Who’s Who in This Relationship

Owner’s Perspective

It’s easy to forget the importance of a dog tag, especially when your pup, Daisy, is a well-trained, stay-in-the-yard kind of dog. So when her tag just went missing one day, I didn’t exactly rush to replace it.

The thing about dog tags is they’re kind of a pet owner formality. I mean, sure, they’re legally required in some places (like ours). And yes, they’re useful if your pup is a wanderer (which Daisy isn’t). But Daisy and I, we had a routine. An understanding (or so I thought).

Replacing the tag promptly, as I discovered, was more than a city ordinance to Daisy. It was about respect. About acknowledgment. And about promptly correcting a significant canine faux pas.

I mean, a dog without its tag is naked! Vulnerable! Lacking in identity! (At least, that’s what Daisy’s forlorn face seemed to say.)

Her normally enthusiastic trot had become a shuffle. Her tail, a barometer of her emotions, hung low and listless. And the look of disillusionment in her eyes made me feel like I’d committed the ultimate betrayal. So, off I went to The Hungry Puppy, a guilt-ridden owner, seeking redemption in the form of a new dog tag.

Daisy’s Perspective: Tagged!

I had my NAME on there. It’s IMPORTANT. It says: THIS IS MY TERRITORY. THIS IS MY PERSON.

Do you know what it’s like to be a dog without a tag? It’s like being a bird without a song. A bee without a buzz. It’s just WRONG.

How did he not NOTICE? What kind of an owner LOSES a dog tag? The audacity!

I sulked. I moped. I GAVE HIM THE CANINE COLD SHOULDER. He seemed to get the message. I saw him grab the keys. “Alright, Daisy,” he said, “Let’s get you a new tag.”

The Happy Ending

Redemption lay just a car ride away at The Hungry Puppy. The staff understood my guilt-ridden eyes and Daisy’s forlorn hope as we entered the store. They pointed us toward their selection of custom, engraved dog tags.

I ran my fingers over them – sturdy and smooth with a metallic sheen. A perfect symbol of Daisy’s identity. I chose one and watched as they engraved “Daisy” on it.

When I attached her new tag to her collar, Daisy preened and pranced, her tail no longer a lethargic pendulum but a happy metronome. She pranced around the store, her new tag clinking joyfully with each step.

Crisis averted. Daisy re-tagged. Dog no longer hates me (until the next canine faux pas, needless to say).
