Owner’s Perspective
I had no idea how seriously Max took his rule of Frisbee retrieval until that day at the park—the day I ignored the unspoken yet binding chains of our owner-dog Frisbee contract.
You see, there’s a well-established procedure in our games of Frisbee Fetch. I throw, he fetches, and then drops the Frisbee at my feet—the canine equivalent of laying out a red carpet. I, the humble human, am then supposed to pick it up for another go. (Canine slave? Maybe. But at least I’m a slave to world-class Frisbee skills.)
On that fateful day, I let the Frisbee sit there after Max had dropped it diligently at my feet. I was chatting carelessly with a fellow dog parent, not noticing Max’s increasingly despondent face. He didn’t run around, didn’t nudge at me with his nose, just sat there, staring at the untouched Frisbee. The sag of his tail and that whimper of disappointment said it all. I’d never felt so clumsy, so thoughtlessly careless, and so guilty.
Max’s Perspective on the Matter
Let’s get one thing straight. I don’t play around when it comes to my Frisbee. PERIOD.
I had my game face on. I was ON MY PAWS, ears twitching, muscles primed. The moment I saw the Frisbee fly, I knew it was going to be a GREAT throw. I took off like a ROCKET. Never in my entire dog life have I made such a leap. A high-flying, hard-earned, and truly EPIC catch. I was the envy of every other dog at that park.
Then came my role in the traditional Frisbee Dance: I carried the Frisbee back. DROPPED it right at her feet. Waited for pickup, throw, and the next exhilarating chase. But the Frisbee stayed on the ground.
I thought, “Is she OK? Did she not SEE my incredible catch?” She was just CHATTING away, leaving the Frisbee ABANDONED on the ground. I had performed my part of the ritual and she…she DISREGARDED mine. SHE BROKE THE FRISBEE CODE.
Crisis Averted: The Hungry Puppy to the Rescue
Max’s silent treatment was more than I could bear. He wouldn’t even look at me. I decided apology treats were in order. Desperate times call for The Hungry Puppy.
I chose his absolute favorite: Primal Freeze-Dried Treats. The duck variant. I opened the treat bag as I walked into the house. Max’s ears perked up from another room, and he was by my side in what seemed like a split second.
Max sniffed the bag, looked up at me, then back at the bag, wagging his tail hesitantly. I gave him a treat. He crunched it thoughtfully whilst keeping a prudent eye on me, the lingering scepticism dissolving at every succulent bite.
With the bag emptied, Max nudged his head into my lap, his tail now wagging freely. He looked up at me, his eyes no longer reproachful but warm, understanding, forgiving.
Crisis averted. Frisbee Gifts: the universal language of peace. Dog no longer hates me (and I’m scheduling Frisbee sensitivity training ASAP).
