My Dog Really Hates Me Because…

…The Downfall of Date Night: When Fancy Fragrance Triggers Fido’s Suspicion

Owner’s Perspective:
Date night with my spouse had been long overdue. Between the hustle of everyday life and the constant tug-of-war between work and sleep, we finally managed to get an evening off. I put on my red dress, my favorite pair of heels (I sometimes forget I own more than sneakers), and dabbed on my special occasion perfume – the very perfume my spouse had bought me. It smelt like a hybrid of roses and vanilla, an aroma so captivating it could mask the scent of wet dog hair—my most common accessory. (Not that I’m complaining, I chose the dog mom life, and I love it!)

But the thing is, I didn’t realize that my perfume might as well have been loaded with dog butt scents. As soon as I made my way towards the door, Cooper, our unwitting guinea pig, took one whiff and stood still, his tail tucked under him. I gave him one last pat on the head (which he received with more restraint than usual), and with a sheepish smile, we left, promising to be back soon.

My heart fell into my stomach when we returned home. Cooper hadn’t budged from the spot where we left him. His tail was still drooped, eyes wider than I’d ever seen, and bearing the same look of scepticism as when we left. It was then that the realisation hit me – my sweet puppy thought I smelt like another dog—his biggest jealousy trigger. Betrayal written all over his face, he turned and walked away. Such were the consequences of my blissful ignorance, or so it seemed.

Musings from Cooper:
EVERYTHING WAS GOING GREAT. I WAS HAVING A RELAXING DAY. Nibbling on my favorite chew toy. Watching squirrels from the window. Waiting for my next meal. THE USUAL.

And then she dressed up. Now don’t get me wrong, I’ve seen her dress up before. She looks nice. She smiles a lot when she does. BUT THIS WAS DIFFERENT. She put on that smell, that FANCY smell.

She walked towards the door—and THERE IT WAS. The whiff of the perfume engulfed me. It felt like a DEER had been let loose in the house. My tail instinctively tucked itself in. That’s NOT her regular smell. She leaned down to pat me and I could NOT ignore it. A foreign scent clung to her – the FRAGRANCE OF BETRAYAL. Confusion. Hurt. A sense of being REPLACED. She muttered something about being back, but the HURT clouded my mind.

When they returned, she was STILL wearing that SCENT OF DECEIT. I HAD TO KEEP MY DISTANCE. I have my PRIDE too, you know. As much as it hurt, I gave her my best ‘I’m upset with you’ look and slunk away to my bed. THIS WAS AN OUTRAGE. Unforgivable!

The Redemption Song:
As I watched Cooper’s tail disappearing into the hallway, guilt stabbed into me. For Cooper to regain his trust in me, I had to fix it, and I had to fix it fast. Grabbing my phone, I called The Hungry Puppy. I knew exactly what to get – the perfect cure for his tormented soul – a pack of Stella & Chewy’s Freeze-Dried Raw Dinner Patties.

A true blue carnivore, Cooper loved any treat that played up his primal instincts. After placing the order for express delivery, I waited anxiously, silently cursing my ill-thought-out perfume choice.

The doorbell rang, and there it was – my ticket to forgiveness. The moment I opened that bag, Cooper’s ears perked up, his tail started wagging, bringing down anything that dared linger in its path. Just the sound of the bag opening was enough to pull him from his slump of betrayal. The transformation was almost magical. He STOOD up, tail wagging, eyes sparkling – the gloom was gone. As he gobbled up one patty after another, the blame in his eyes started to fade, replaced with a shining look of affection.

Crisis averted. Scent of betrayal defeated. Dog no longer hates me (until the next date night).
