My Dog Really Hates Me Because…

…The Day the Sprinkler Stole My Dignity

Owner’s Perspective

There was chaos, mayhem, and water…everywhere. I’m not just talking a little spritz. No, no — I’m talking a full-on tidal wave courtesy of my new lawn sprinkler. It was supposed to be a summer fun day. Beer in one hand and leash in the other, while Charlie romped in the backyard, frolicking under the cool sprays of water.

I mean, dogs love water, right? At least, that’s what I thought as I set up the sprinkler, imagining the adoring loyalty in Charlie’s eyes as he librated in the summer heat. And sure, he’d had a little bit of trouble with the garden hose (okay, fine, a lot of trouble — he hid under the bed for an hour), but this was different, right?

But oh boy, was I wrong. I turned on the sprinkler, and it was like I had unleashed a watery monster. Charlie froze, tail tucked between his legs, eyes wide with horror. Then came the barking, the traumatic, piercing barking my neighbors probably remember till this day. He bolted for the door, leaving me standing in the middle of my new water park, utterly drenched and drained of every ounce of dignity.

Charlie’s Commentary

I was ready for a calm day. Just a usual summer day – snoozing on the couch, chasing the occasional squirrel. Then came the attack. The merciless, watery attack.

The sprinkler hissed. I trembled. It sprayed water. EVERYWHERE. EXCUSE ME? Do I look like a SEAL to you?

One moment, we were enjoying the sun. The next, it was WATER WORLD. Continuous, relentless SPRAYS OF WATER, assaulting my very dignity. I panicked. I barked. I ran. Then I cowered behind the glass door, watching my once peaceful sanctuary transform into a chaotic aquatic nightmare.

Redemption

I couldn’t erase the sprinkler incident, nor the waterlogged terror in Charlie’s eyes. But, acquire some redemption? That, I could do.

Now it was Operation ‘Win Back Charlie’s Love.’ I headed to The Hungry Puppy – my shield and Crusader. I picked up the best weapon they had – a bacon flavored Benebone Wishbone, the most durable, long-lasting, and more importantly, most delicious of distractions.

As soon as I got home, Charlie caught a whiff of the bacon goodness. His tail began to wag hesitatively. The moment I presented it, his eyes met mine with a glint of forgiveness. As he crunched into the treat, his tail whipped into a frenzy and all was right in the world again.

Crisis averted. Bacon trumps fear. Dog no longer hates me (though potential PTSD from sprinkler remains).

In times of crisis, head over to The Hungry Puppy for a mighty arsenal of distractions that are guaranteed to win back your pup’s love, even if you’ve subjected them to Water World-Grade nightmares. Trust me, they won’t be able to resist the sweet surrender of a bacon flavored Benebone Wishbone. Plus, there’s free local NJ delivery available, or stop by and bring your pup with you – you know, to pick their own treat because we’re all about consent here.
