Owner’s Perspective
Picture this: the comfiest couch, a steaming cup of tea, and my old pup Max by my side. Max and I have a sacred tradition. Every Saturday evening, on the dot, we watch his favorite T.V. show, “The K9 Factor.” It’s his hour, filled with barks, tricks, and Max’s excitement (okay, fine, and maybe a couple of dog treats as a show-watching snack).
But last Saturday, I messed up real bad.
There was a family event, nothing I could wriggle out of without getting 20 aunts tutting over my apparent lack of family spirit. Max was promised that we would watch his show as soon as I returned home. I truly meant it. Until the little thing called “time” made me a liar. The event got dragged, I lost track of the clock, and by the time I got home, my promise was as expired as last week’s milk.
The first thing I noticed when I walked into the house wasn’t Max’s usual bouncing-off-the-walls welcome. It was the intentional lack of a welcome. There was the old chap, conspicuously not wagging his tail, and glaring at the silent T.V.. Max just looked at me, then at the T.V., then back at me, in a cycle of searing disappointment. Shame has never felt so real.
Max Sasses Back
The couch was empty. The tea was cold. The show was over.
Saturday night is K9 night. Everyone KNOWS THAT. It’s a big deal. No, it’s THE BIG DEAL! It’s not just about watching other dogs do amazing tricks (which I can totally do if she asked, by the way). It’s about US time – our special bonding hour.
I’ve been waiting since 6:59 PM. The couch was ready. I was ready. And SHE BROKE THE PROMISE. A dent in our tradition if there ever was one.
I hear the front door. My ears prick up. THIS IS IT….but wait…it’s different this time. I didn’t hear the mad scramble of keys, the hurried footsteps, the nervous “I’m back baby, let’s start the show!” Instead, I hear the slow drag of guilt, the quiet clinking of late keys, and the silence of a show missed.
EXCUSE ME, MA’AM! Does she even understand what she done?
Redemption
From the moment I made eye contact with Max and his silent television, I knew I’d stepped into guilt town, population: me. Max’s disappointment was a punch to the gut, one that made me realize what our adorable little tradition really meant to him.
“Alright, buddy,” I sighed, “I’ve got an idea. Just stay put.”
I grabbed my phone and dialed The Hungry Puppy, asking them to deliver a bag of Precise Holistic Complete Small and Medium Breed Puppy Formula. Max’s favorite. The stuff was like magic, always managed to get his tail wagging.
Within an hour, the delivery was here. The moment I opened that bag, Max was by my side, his tail and ears perked up in excitement. I poured some into his bowl, and the sight of Max excitedly diving into his food was every bit the redemption I was hoping for.
We curled up on the couch together, him chewing and me stroking his head. With a satisfied sigh, he plonked his head on my lap, all forgiven.
Crisis averted. Who needs T.V. when you’ve got a bag of Puppy Formula. Dog no longer hates me (until next Saturday’s episode airs).
