My Dog Really Hates Me Because…

…The Day I Made My Dog Wear Snow Boots

Owner’s Perspective

I know. I KNOW. The very idea sparks betrayal in canine eyes everywhere. Hear me out. It was an ordinary winter day in NJ. The snow was falling steadily, and our street was blanketed in fluffy white snow up to ankle depth. It was perfect snowman weather – well, for me at least. Now, here’s where the tables turned. As I dusted off my pup Duke’s leash, I had a bright, or so I thought, idea. I grabbed the new snow boots that I recently bought from The Hungry Puppy store. Can you blame me for wanting to keep my furry friend’s paws warm? The boots were even fleece lined! (“For maximum comfort,” the tag had said.)

Imagine the scene: Leash in one hand, tiny dog snow boots in the other, a hopeful sparkle in my eyes, and my dog staring at me like I just committed an unspeakable crime. I took a deep breath and began the scandalous boot application process. One…two…three…four. They all went on without a hitch. Duke, however, stood there frozen like a statue, gazing at me in silent judgement.

Finally, we stepped outside to brave the winter wonderland. Duke, rather comically, took his first steps in the snow with the snow boots. Ever tried walking with flippers on land? It looked somewhat like that. That’s when I felt it: the pang of guilt. My well-intentioned attempt at canine care seemed more like I had committed a doggy fashion crime, punishable by an endless silent treatment and accusatory puppy eyes. So ends my confession, me revealing my true colors as a well-meaning but slightly misguided dog mom.

Duke’s Like “Really, Susan? Really?”

Ok. Let’s get something on the table. I am a DOG. I have fur. I have hardy paws. And I have survived WINTER every year so far, thank you very much. But boots? The audacity! I was all geared up to prance in the snow, do my doggy business, and play catch. But then, I saw her reach for THAT box. My heart sank. I knew what was coming.

In they went, my free spirit paw-spirits, one after another, into individual fur-lined prisons. And “maximum comfort?” Ha! It felt just like those crinkly things humans call socks, only worse, because they’re on MY PAWS. I tell you, dear reader, I was deceived! Bamboozled!

Then, the ultimate humiliation: stepping outside. The glares from the neighbor’s cat. The amusement in the birds’ chirps. A squirrel even chuckled! (Yes, they chuckle. Trust me, I know.) Each step on the snow resonated with my crushed dignity. As I trudged along, I could only think, “Snow, my old chilly friend, we meet again in these dire circumstances.”

Crisis Averted

My guilt hit me like a snowball, straight in the face, right in the middle of Duke’s snow trudge of shame. I caved. I couldn’t bear the sight of it. So, I knelt down, removed each boot, and gave each paw a warm soothing rub. I don’t know if it was the relief of liberation or my earnest apology that melted his icy indignation, but Duke wagged his tail and nudged his head into my hands.

Later that afternoon, I returned to The Hungry Puppy and picked up a jar of Musher’s Secret Pet Paw Protection Wax, an effective alternative to keep Duke’s paw pads safe in harsh weather conditions. When we got home, I scooped the wax out with my fingers and massaged it onto each of Duke’s paw pads. It wasn’t as offensive as boots, Duke seemed to agree, as evidenced by his tail wag shaking with fervor.

With one enthusiastic bark, Duke forgave my snow boot transgression. We spent the remainder of the day playing in the snow together, sans boots and full of joy.

Crisis averted. Dog’s dignity restored. Dog no longer hates me (until next winter).
