The Owner’s Side
Today, it was just one of those days. The kind where you spend most of it running errands and your to-do list seems endless. On days like these, a pot of coffee, an audiobook, and a good sense of humor are my survival tools. I tackled the grocery store. Dry cleaners? Check. Pick up the kids? You bet. I felt invincible, like a modern Hercules performing his legendary labors. Until…I realized I forgot the dog treats.
You know the type of treats I’m talking about. Those gourmet biscotti from The Hungry Puppy that make Daisy’s tail wag at the speed of light. Honestly, the last time I forgot them, Daisy made me feel like I had committed grand larceny. Argumentatively, to her, it must have felt that way. I would like to tell you I forgot them because I was distracted by a thrilling climax in my audiobook. But honestly, I was just daydreaming about a hot bath and fluffy slippers.
When Daisy noticed the absence of her beloved treats in the grocery bags, her reaction was an Oscar-worthy performance of “Dog Betrayed.” Ears drooping, she gave me a look that said, “How could you?”. She then dramatically retreated to her corner, sighing audibly and gazing at me with an intensity that would put a soap opera star to shame.
As I cooked dinner, amidst the delicious aroma of roast beef and vegetables, a shadow of guilt settled over me. My happy little Labrador, my enthusiastic walking companion, the unfailing greeter at the door— was stuck in a melancholy funk. Over treats!
Daisy’s Perspective
Let’s get one thing straight. IT WAS TREAT DAY. I can read the calendar, thank you very much.
My morning had been hopeful, as I watched her gather her bags and keys. Treat Day always comes after laundry day, and today was that day. My tail started wagging as soon as I saw HER get the reusable shopping bags. Yes, the good ones. The ones that carry MY gourmet biscotti treats. The anticipation was WONDERFUL.
BUT THEN. Oh, the BETRAYAL.
I watched her unload the bags. Vegetables, first. Whatever. Human food. But then, no treats. I went to my corner. I SIGHED so she would know JUST HOW UPSET I WAS. Treat Day… RUINED.
How Peace Was Restored
The next morning, after a night of me gloomily moping around, she couldn’t stand it anymore. She looked at my forlorn face, dropped her coffee mug, and announced, “Alright, Daisy, let’s remedy this catastrophe.” Daisy, dear reader, I think she felt my heartbreak.
Off to The Hungry Puppy we went, and the moment we stepped inside, she headed straight to the Gourmet Biscotti aisle. She even made sure to pick the flavors I adore— Bacon Breakfast and Chicken Dinner. You should see them, they’re like dog heaven in biscotti form.
On the way out, her guilt must have still been stewing because we stopped by the counter and she said, “One of the premium chews as well, please.” If tails could smile, mine would be grinning from ear to ear.
We returned home and I could hardly wait for her to open the bag. The familiar crunch filled the room and it was like music to my ears. A wagging tail, a satisfied belly, and a forgiving heart. Crisis averted.
Crisis averted. Biscotti bounty restored. Dog no longer hates me (though she’s still milking it for extra ear scratchings).
