My Dog Really Hates Me Because…

…The Day I Forgot About “Play Friday”

Owner’s Perspective
I’m a creature of habit. Fridays are for movies, popcorn, and of course, playtime with Max. But last Friday, I broke this tradition. A friend invited me to a comedy night downtown, and in the throes of anticipation for a much-needed change in scenery, I completely forgot about “Play Friday.”

It was a hard pill to swallow. Do dogs even understand the concept of time? (That’s what I told myself, at least). But suddenly, Max’s usual pre-play excitement wasn’t there; the incessant tail wagging, the hopeful eyes, replaced with a silent, confused gaze. It was then that the crushing guilt hit me. “Oh no, I forgot about ‘Play Friday’,” I thought, my chest tightening with the inevitability of a canine cold shoulder.

Max’s Grievances
So, there I was, celebrating TGIF with all my doggy enthusiasm. I strutted around the living room, eyes shimmering with excitement. Because you see, PLAY FRIDAY is the highlight of my week. It’s the day I get to play tug war and fetch without a time limit.

But friend, let me tell you, the unthinkable happened. SHE LEFT. Without a trace, without a goodbye hug, gone. I waited by the door, my tail slowly losing momentum, my heart sinking into doggy despair. I WAS BETRAYED.

I curled up on the slick wooden floor, shadows lengthening with the passing minutes. The cold tiles did nothing to numb the sting of forgotten traditions. Quiet whimpers echoed in the empty house. I was alone. My heart ached in doggy sorrow.

Crisis Averted
That night, my guilt was a palpable knot in my stomach. I swung the door opened to be met by the saddest set of eyes I’ve ever seen. Kneeling down, I brushed my fingers through Max’s soft fur, muttering a broken string of apologies. But he just sighed and nuzzled his head further into his paws.

Despite it being late, I knew it was time to right my wrongs. Picking up the phone, I placed an order from The Hungry Puppy for Max’s favorite — the Kong Classic Dog Toy, big enough to stuff his favorite treats into. I went for the fast, guilt-driven express delivery.

The knock on the door was met with an alert tail wag. The moment Max saw the familiar Kong toy, he morphed back to his playful self. His tail wagged with renewed vigor, eyes bright, and he barely waited for me to stuff treats in before bounding off to his favorite play corner.

His tail waved like a flag of forgiveness. He trotted lovingly back to me, nudged my hand with his snout before prancing back to his toys. Max’s play vigor was back, not just relegating the events of the evening to the past but promising play-filled Fridays ahead.

Crisis averted. Play Friday reinstated. Dog no longer hates me (until the next lapse in schedule).
