My Dog Really Hates Me Because…

… The Day I Decided to Skip the Park

Owner’s Perspective

I was tired. It had been one of those days. You know the ones: the deadlines keep punching you, the car refuses to start, your coffee tastes like burnt rubber, and your co-worker “accidentally” eats your lunch. (Seriously, Jerry, my name was on it.) I just wanted to head home, curl up under a blanket, and melt into my favorite TV shows.

But there was Buster, waiting at the door, his tail wagging like a metronome set on allegro. His eyes wide open, gleaming with pure joy and expectancy. His leash hanging between his teeth – a statement more than a hint. A walk around the park, the lake, the circle of old oak trees – our ritual. But that day, I just didn’t have it in me.

I told Buster, “Not today, buddy.” His tail stopped. His eyes widened a bit more, if that’s possible. He still had the leash in his mouth, the hope in his eyes.

And then, I committed the ultimate act of betrayal. I set down my keys, walked past him, and, with a sigh of relief, planted myself on the couch. Buster just stood there, the leash still in his mouth, the hope fading from his eyes, replaced by a look of utter disbelief and shock. I turned around to catch him walking slowly to his bed, every step echoing a tale of heartbreak and disappointment. He didn’t even turn to look at me as he gently placed the leash by his side and lay down with the saddest little whimper.

Buster Tells It Like It Is

I WAS READY. I WOKE UP EARLY. I DID MY ZOOMIES. I DIDN’T EVEN HARASS THE MAILMAN TODAY (although, in my defense, he didn’t show up). I WAS THE PICTURE OF PATIENCE.

He was late. BUT THAT’S OK. He’s busy; I understand. I waited. Then I heard the garage door. My tail wagged. MY SPIRITS LIFTED. My day was about to get AMAZING.

I PICKED UP THE LEASH. HELD IT FOR HIM TO TAKE. Did my best SIT. Tail wagging, eyes shining. This was THE MOMENT. And then…

He passed me. HE PASSED ME. WENT STRAIGHT TO THE COUCH. THE LEASH STILL IN MY MOUTH, MY TAIL FROZEN IN TIME. THE BETRAYAL HIT ME. Like a chew toy torn apart. Like a leftover steak thrown in the trash. Like a… a… I can’t even.

I went to my bed, the place of refuge from this cruel world. I LAY DOWN, THE LEASH BESIDE ME. A testimony of broken dreams and a promised joy crushed under the weight of HUMAN INSENSITIVITY.

How Peace Was Restored

I couldn’t take it anymore. The silence was ear shattering. The air was heavy with guilt. Buster’s sighs of resignation stabbed me like a thousand tiny knives. I missed our walks too. The fresh air. Buster’s leaps of joy every time he picked up a stick or found a new scent.

So, I picked up my keys again. I called The Hungry Puppy. I ordered Buster’s favorite treats, the Primal freeze-dried nuggets, and a new Kong toy. Then, gathering what strength I had left, I nudged Buster awake. His eyes opened slowly, lined with disbelief as I uttered the magic word, “Park.”

The moment I said it, Buster sprang to his feet, his body vibrating with pure ecstasy, his tail hammering the floor, and the leash back in his mouth. He was a tornado of joy as we walked to the car, the disappointment of the day forgotten.

We drove to the park. I threw the ball. He retrieved it. He met new friends. We walked around our usual trail. The lake sparkled, the oak trees stood tall and stoic, and the evening air was crisp and pleasant. Toe-tapping in the grass and treats by the lake later, he was leaning against me, both of us airing out our exhaustion under the speckled evening sky.

Crisis averted. Mistakes were made but were also rectified. Dog no longer hates me (he reserves the right to hold this over me for eternity.)

So, remember folks, even when your day was really the worst, your dog will always be there wagging his tail, ready for that walk that he loves so much. Don’t disappoint him, grab a leash and go for a walk, or visit The Hungry Puppy for some treat motivation. Jared, I hope you’re reading this.
