My Dog Really Hates Me Because…

…The Case of the Forgotten Fetch Toy

Owner’s Perspective

It was a perfect day for a trip to the park. Sun shining, birds chirping, the slightest cool breeze in the air. Roller was all but vibrating as he raced to and fro in the backyard, eyes sparkling with excitement. You know the look. The “I’m going on a REALLY long walk today” kind of joy.

I had everything ready — water bottle, check. Treats for rewards, check. Roll of pickup bags, check. What could possibly go wrong, right? (Don’t you just love the innocence of such question marks?)

We reached the park in record time. Roller was in full wiggle mode, his entire furry body vibrating with happiness. It was fetch time! His favorite time! Only it wasn’t. Because in the rush to get everything ready, I forgot the pièce de résistance. The fetch toy was still at home.

Roller’s ears fell flat. His tail went limp. Those big brown eyes shooting daggers. I swear he mouthed “traitor” before he flopped down on the grass, letting out the most melancholic sigh I’d ever heard from a dog.

Roller’s Rant

I LOVE FETCH. It’s my hobby. My joy. MY PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS. I, Roller, the superdog, chase the distant toy, capture it with the finesse of a ballet dancer, and bring it back. Simple, elegant, PERFECT.

Then, the park came into sight. THE PARK! The cathedral of fetch. Scenes of triumph raced through my mind. The wind in my fur. The envy in the other dogs’ eyes. Winning fetch is a competitive sport, you know.

THEN THE BETRAYAL. No fetch toy. What sort of a world do we live in where a dog goes to the park expecting a game of fetch, and there’s NO FETCH TOY? How could she forget? Did she not see the shiny toy sitting by the door? Did my anticipatory pirouettes mean nothing?

I sat in the middle of the park refusing to move. Fetch-less in a park filled with potential fetch magic. A TRAVESTY! I shot her the look, the “you’ve killed fetch” look. Silent protest. Heavy sigh.

The Happy Ending

It was unbearable. Those accusatory eyes. The loss. The betrayal. I couldn’t let Roller’s day end in disappointment. So, I did what any self-respecting dog owner would do — I said those magic words, “Alright, buddy, we’re going to fix this” and took Roller on an impromptu trip to The Hungry Puppy.

We walked out with an exciting new addition to our fetch collection. A squeaky Kong Flyer that promised hours of unbeatable fetch fun. Roller’s tail started wagging the instant he saw it. His eyed sparkled. He even gave it a few test squeezes with his mouth. Fetch was saved!

Back at the park, Roller trotted around, the new squeaky toy flying through the air. The sight of him joyfully chasing after the Kong Flyer, all previous disappointment forgotten, was worth every penny.

Crisis averted. Fetch reborn. Dog no longer hates me (for now).
