My Dog Really Hates Me Because…

…The Case of the Forgotten Bedtime Routine

The Owner’s Side

Saturday nights are typically the stuff of legends at our home. Usually, it means extra cuddle time and a movie marathon in the living room with drool-worthy popcorn (at a safe, dog-friendly distance, of course). Bailey, our Basset Hound, loves it. She nestles into her favorite blanket, contently chomping on her chew toy as we enjoy the flicks. But this week, my mother-in-law’s surprise visit… well, let’s just say it disrupted our sacred ritual.

You know how it is — in the chaos of greeting, cooking, and accommodating unexpected guests, routines can go out the window. The nightly ritual of cuddling up with Bailey, toy in mouth and surrounded by her favorite blanket, was forgotten amidst the flurry of activity.

As the evening slipped away, I finally noticed. Bailey was there, sitting away from the laughter and chatter, quietly looking at me with those “you forgot our night” eyes. Her usually perky ears drooped, and her tail did a slow, knowing wag before settling still. I made a mental note to make it up to her but didn’t think the consequences of a skipped routine could be so… dramatic.

Bailey’s Perspective: When Saturday Feels Like Monday

There I was, in my clean coat, eyes brimming with anticipation. SATURDAY. The chew toy was ready, the blanket was inviting, and my tail was tuned to maximum wagging speed. EVERYTHING WAS SET. The one thing missing? My human.

First, the doorbell rang. Guests, lots of them. My human’s attention shifted. Dinner table chatter replaced our nightly popcorn and movie ritual. I WAITED. The clock ticked away, and so did my hopes. My toys lay there, untouched. The TV screen, dark. THE BETRAYAL.

The unmistakable whiff of my favorite popcorn lingered in the room, but where was my promised cuddle? WHERE WAS MY HUMAN? Instead of corny movie lines, I heard peals of boisterous laughter. Instead of the warm fuzzy feels of being held and loved — NOTHING.

Redemption: Operation Pampered Pooch

The next morning, I was determined to right my wrong. Bailey had given me the cold shoulder all night. Each pitiful glance from her sent pangs of guilt through me. It was time to take action.

I called The Hungry Puppy and ordered Bailey’s all-time favorites — Dr. Marty’s freeze-dried treats and an extra cuddly blanket. I dropped everything to make the journey to reclaim her faith in me as not just an owner, but a best friend.

The moment those freeze-dried delights and the new plush blanket were in play, the transformation was astounding. Bailey’s eyes sparkled, her ears perked up, and I swear she wagged her tail so fast it was a blur. She nuzzled into her new blanket, crunching on her beloved treats, all while giving me those forgiven eyes that screamed, “All is well!”

Crisis averted. Bedtime cuddles restored. Dog no longer hates me. (Will be taking up calendar reminders for mother-in-law visits)
