Owner’s Perspective
This week, I decided to undertake a big home improvement project: New sod for the backyard. The old grass was patchy, and I assumed my dog, Daisy, would appreciate a little touch-up on her personal playground. (Can you hear my misguided optimism? Because it’s echoing around the now empty doghouse.)
So, off I went to the garden store, confidently choosing the softest, greenest sod. I’m not even a garden person but who doesn’t love a lawn that looks like it belongs on a golf course? Daisy will be thrilled, I thought. A five-star play zone worthy of my four-legged love.
Fast forward two days and countless aching muscles later, and the backyard looked like a suburban oasis. Daisy raced outside, ready to enjoy it, as I watched in anticipation.
Her reaction? She froze. Stiff. Tail down. Eyes wide. And then, with an accusatory glance my way, she marched, very deliberately, to her doghouse—with one final, over-the-shoulder glare for good measure.
Daisy Dishes:
NEW GRASS. She got NEW GRASS. I mean, where do I even begin with this dramatic development?
It all started when I had the garden to myself—a glorious kingdom of grass and dirt, familiar and comforting beneath my paws. I had a routine—ample space for solid zoomies, the best chase-your-own-tail spot, the PERFECT dirt patch for luxuriant rolls.
And then suddenly, two days ago, the human became unusually fixated on my turf. She embarked on some bizarre grass-changing ritual. The next thing I know, my familiar green, my happy place was GONE. Replaced with this IMPOSTER GRASS.
Talk about a betrayal of untold proportions! Welcome to Daisy’s world, where the ground beneath your paws is liable to CHANGE without notice.
How Peace Was Restored
I felt the twinge of guilt settle as Daisy chose the doghouse over the new grass. She was boycotting her beloved garden, and who could blame her, really?
So, I reluctantly picked up the phone, dialed The Hungry Puppy, and alloyed my guilt into action. Daisy had always loved their Sportsman’s Pride FieldMaster Premium Dog Food, so I ordered a bag. I planned a peace offering—dinner alfresco perhaps, on that dreaded new grass.
A delivery later (bless The Hungry Puppy for their speedy service), with a bowl brimming with Daisy’s favorite food, I coaxed her to the contentious lawn. The smell of the familiar FieldMaster seemed to loosen her indignation, as she warily ventured out of the doghouse.
She sniffed the food, gave the grass a suspicious sniff, then looked up at me—eyes still slightly reproachful. I held my breath as she edged toward the bowl before lowering herself with resigned dignity onto the grass and began to eat.
As Daisy savored her favourite food with happy tail thumps on the brand new sod, I felt a weight lift.
Crisis averted. Grass accepted. Dog no longer hates me (for now, at least).
