My Dog Really Hates Me Because…

… The Day of the Uninvited Houseguest

Penny’s Perspective: The Unexpected Neighbor Visit

Ever have one of those friends? You know, the one that shows up unannounced on a whim because they just ‘were passing by’. Yeah, Greg’s one of those. And today, he showed up with his puppy, Rover, bounding with energy and full of mischief. Now don’t get me wrong, I love dogs, but that look in Max’s eyes? The “I cannot BELIEVE you let ANOTHER dog in MY house” look? It was as heartbreaking as it was hilarious.

Max, usually our ever-loyal retriever, suddenly transformed, huffing into the other room and flopping on his bed. “Nice of you to warn me, hooman,” his sigh seemed to say. Each glance thrown my way was full of judgment (and just a touch of reproach), topped off with that very physical sulk that only a dog can master.

To add insult to injury, Rover was in his own version of canine seventh heaven, bounding about the house like a tornado, playing with all of Max’s toys. Watching the bewildered look on Max’s face was truly a picture, but not one that came with a pleasant feeling. Because to Max, this wasn’t just another casual houseguest. No, this was a betrayal of epic proportions.

Max’s Musings: The Sudden Betrayal

Casual afternoon nap. CHECK. My favorite sunny spot on the rug. CHECK. All set for a perfect day. And then SHE lets HIM in. Without so much as a warning! ROVER. ROVER, of all dogs. My arch-nemesis – the puppy with the unstoppable enthusiasm for EVERYTHING.

I mean, could this day get any worse? And guess what, it did! Not only did Rover march into MY house, but he started playing with MY TOYS. What. A. GALL.

I did the only thing I could under such dire circumstances. I huffed. I puffed. And I lay down in my spot, carefully arranging my face into the perfect mixture of accusation and hurt. A LEAST dramatic sigh every ten minutes, just to make sure my grief was perfectly communicated. The indignity of it all!

The Happy Ending

The guilt was unbearable. Every woeful gaze from Max’s betrayed eyes was like a knife in the heart. I couldn’t let this go on. I grabbed my keys and headed out the door, a mission formed. I needed to make this right. No way was I letting Max believe I’d choose Rover over him.

My destination? None other than The Hungry Puppy. I searched out the ultimate peace offering – a deluxe puzzle toy from Outward Hound, a perfect fit for Max’s intelligent antics. Combined with some freeze-dried lamb treats from Stella & Chewy, I knew this would bring that wag back to Max’s tail.

The mission was a success. The moment I walked in the door, Max sat up, his tail jerking to life at the smell of the treats. He gave the puzzle a few sniffs before attacking it with good-natured enthusiasm. Within minutes, the sad eyes were transformed into gleeful satisfaction as he solved the puzzled toy and was rewarded with scrumptious treats.

Crisis averted. One puzzle toy later. Dog no longer hates me (until our next unexpected visitor).
