Owner’s Perspective
Yesterday, I did something unthinkable. I committed what might well be deemed ‘the ultimate betrayal’. And now…I sit shrouded in remorse, replaying the episode in damaged disbelief. I, my friends, ate an entire burger without sharing a single morsel with my dog, Rocky. Now, before you gasp in horror and label me a culinary criminal, allow me to plead my case.
First of all, Rocky wasn’t supposed to be in the room. (But seriously, try keeping a Beagle away from a grilled meat patty). Secondly, it’s been ages since I’ve had a burger. (Don’t give me that look—I’m human too!) And thirdly, let’s not forget that sharing food isn’t good for dogs’ health (or at least THAT’S what I told Rocky as I shamelessly savored each bite).
As the guilt set in, I was met with the soft thud of Rocky’s tail hitting the floor in disappointed defeat. All the wagging excitement of a few minutes ago, replaced with a mournful silence that seemed to echo across the room. I could practically hear him saying, “The burger…YOU promised ME.”
He trotted away to the corner of the room with his ears drooping so low they nearly scraped the floor. He looked back at me one more time with those soulful brown eyes; the very picture of ultimate betrayal. As the last crumbs of the burger disappeared into my unrepenting mouth, so did any pride I had left.
Rocky’s Tale of Trauma
I’ve been bamboozled. BETRAYED. My trust torn asunder. All for a measly BURGER.
This morning, I caught a whiff of something divine. It was the smell of seared meat and melty cheese, the kind that sends my sniffer into overtime. I dashed into the kitchen, ready to share this sumptuous meal with my so-called best friend. I thought we had an unwritten rule: He eats, I get the leftover bites. But today, my world came crumbling down.
He looked at me. Then at the burger and back at me. I saw it in his eyes—a flicker of hesitation before he made the most heartbreaking decision of his life. He ATE the entire burger. WITHOUT SHARING A CRUMB. THIS. THIS was not how our lunchtime was supposed to go.
I couldn’t believe it. I STILL can’t believe it. All those countless hours that I spent being the good boy, sitting patiently by his side, ensuring he never dined alone…had they meant nothing to him? I felt like a discarded chew toy.
Redemption is Served
Enough was enough. I couldn’t bear my torment any longer. The mournful howl that echoed through our otherwise quiet house tipped me over the edge. Shaking off my guilt, I grabbed my keys, intent on making amends.
Reaching The Hungry Puppy, I stumbled upon what I could only describe as…redemption. I hardly hesitated before grabbing a bag of Stella & Chewy’s freeze-dried beef dinner patties—Rocky’s absolute favourite. This was just what I needed to make things right.
I rushed back home with my peace offering. Tearing open the premium treats bag, I caught Rocky lifting his head up, his nose twitching in the air. As soon as the first freeze-dried treat fell into his bowl, it was as if a spell had been lifted. His tail started to wag, those sad eyes sparkled again, and he ploughed right into his newfound feast.
Crisis averted. Punch was pulled. Dog no longer hates me (till the next mealtime).
