The Owner’s Side
It all started as another perfect Sunday. The sun shining, birds singing, a brilliant day in all its glory. Just the perfect day for an outing to The Hungry Puppy dog park with Bella. But then, I got this call. A last-minute emergency from work. (Yes, on a Sunday! Apparently, emergencies don’t respect the weekdays anymore.)
Bella was already excited. She knows what the leash and that particular tone of my voice mean. It’s her “we’re going to the park” dance – lots of tail wagging, a bit of jumping up and down, and those happy eyes. But here I was, clueless about how to break the news that we weren’t going anywhere after all.
So, instead of an announcement, I decided to drop a hint. Took off the leash. Switched off the TV. Bella stopped wagging. Then came the longest, soul-piercing stare. I explained, I pleaded, I apologized. Bella tilted her head and just walked away, leaving me standing there, feeling like the worst human on earth.
Bella Relives the Trauma
Bella Tells the Real Story
A sunny day MEANS park day. I was READY. I had my zoomies ready. I saw the leash. I heard the VOICE. I SAW THE CAR KEYS. But then everything STOPPED.
No leash. No happy voice. No car keys jingling. He took out his phone. Started talking. Talking and TALKING. And that was it. My human betrayed me. On a perfectly sunny day with the BIRDS SINGING.
Who does that? Who gets their dog’s hopes up and then crushes them? Does he not care about our bond? Do our park runs and fetch sessions mean NOTHING to him?
I walked away. What else could I do? I had enough drama for a day.
Redemption Found
It was Bella’s silence that did it. I couldn’t handle it for the rest of the day. That’s when I had an idea. If Bella couldn’t go to the park, I would bring the park to Bella.
I dialed up The Hungry Puppy and ordered Bella’s favorite toys – a fabulous chewable stuffed squirrel and a Kong Wobbler puzzle toy. High-quality stuff that I know she loves.
When the toys came, Bella’s reaction was pure magic. She sniffed the bag, saw her new toys, and for the first time that day, her tail began to wag and her eyes lit up. The stuffed squirrel was immediately put to the test, and the Wobbler kept her busy and entertained for a good part of the day.
After a bathtub of slobber was shed over her new toys, she ambled over to where I sat, a content sigh accompanying her. She plopped herself down beside me and nestled her head into my lap. The forgiveness in her eyes said it all.
Crisis averted. Day saved. Dog no longer hates me (until the next trip to the park gets canned).
If you ever face a “betrayal of the park,” don’t despair. Just go online to The Hungry Puppy and make your selection from their fantastic range of entertainment options. Your furbaby will forgive and forget in no time. Trust me.
