My Dog Really Hates Me Because…

…The Great Brushing Betrayal

The Owner’s Side

Here’s a confession: I’ve been lazy about brushing Toby’s coat recently. I know, I know, it’s essential to keep his fur feeling healthy and looking shiny. But sometimes there are chores to do, schedules to manage, emails to send and before I know it, the grooming brush is buried under a pile of forgotten to-dos. To defend myself a bit here, Toby’s never been a big fan of getting groomed either (please hold your judgment until I finish my story).

A few days ago, I found him rolling on the carpet, trying to scratch an itch. His usually silky hair was looking a bit dull. He was desperately trying to reach a spot with his mouth, chewing a little. His eyes asked me why no help was forthcoming. That’s when I experienced it – the dreaded dog parent guilt.

Now, you should know that there aren’t many things worse than the guilt of realizing your furry friend has been uncomfortable because you skipped out on a routine they rely on you for. Toby’s usual fetching eyes were filled with disappointment (which, trust me, no dog owner wants to see). They seemed to say, “How could you let this happen? Why haven’t you brushed me?”

Toby’s Take on Things

I WAS ITCHY. SO. VERY. ITCHY. AND I HAD NO ONE TO BLAME BUT HER.

It was manageable at first, just a little strand here and there. Then it turned into a CONSTANT BATTLE against my knotted fur. I tried all my signature moves. The backward roll. The sprint-and-stop. But the itchiness ONLY GOT WORSE.

Every day she would pet me, and every day I would hope, “This is it. She’s going to get the brush.” BUT NO. SHE WOULD JUST RUFFLE MY FUR AND WALK AWAY LIKE NOTHING WAS WRONG.

Excuse me?! Couldn’t she see what was happening? Couldn’t she SEE that my fur was a disaster?! How could she just LEAVE ME LIKE THIS?!

How Peace Was Restored

Seeing Toby miserable was more than I could handle. Something had to be done immediately. So, I reached out to The Hungry Puppy, where I knew I’d find the perfect solution for my grooming negligence.

I found a fantastic grooming tool, the FURminator Undercoat Deshedding Tool. It promised to get rid of loose hair without cutting or damaging Toby’s beautiful coat. It felt like all my prayers (and Toby’s) were answered.

When I ran the FURminator through Toby’s fur for the first time, his reaction was priceless. He sat perfectly, tail wagging, as I gently brushed his coat. Each long swipe alleviated a chunk of his unease. The little sigh of relief, followed by an excited wag of his tail and a contented lean against my leg, was all I needed to know that Toby had accepted my apology.

Crisis averted. A coat smoother than butter. Dog no longer hates me (until the next grooming schedule slips away).
