Owner’s Perspective
Ah, bedtime. The hour when chaos slowly slips into serenity, where I can finally experience peace and tranquility (except for wayward toy blocks and stubbing my toes). It isn’t just me, though. Old loyal Charlie loves bedtime too. It’s our cozy routine, our “us time.” Each evening, we’d snuggle up on the bed for a calm, quiet hour of scratches and belly rubs.
This evening, though, as the sun sank and the evening close in, a pang of guilt hit me — I’d forgotten the ritual “good-night biscuit.” A long-standing tradition, a crunchy treat marking the end of an adventurous day and the beginning of a peaceful night. (You know the one, the biscuit you give when you’re dog-tired and ready to hit the hay?)
I stared at the empty biscuit tin on the kitchen counter in dismay. Then I looked at Charlie with imploring eyes, as if silently begging him to understand. His eyes gleamed, his tail stilled, his adorable floppy ears dropped a notch. Charlie flopped down on his bed with a sigh, clearly knowing that something was up. And not in a good way.
Charlie’s Clarification
YES, you got that right. NO BISCUIT! My tail never lies. When I sense impending heartbreak, it stops wagging. It’s automatic. I COULD TELL. The signs were there. Her eyes didn’t have the normal sparkle. The kitchen didn’t smell right. WHERE WAS MY BISCUIT!
I could almost taste the chewy, beef-flavored goodness of my biscuit. I was humble. I was patient. But when she put her head on the soft, fluffy pillow and shut her eyes, my heart SANK.
As she drifted into sleep, there I was, with an empty stomach, an empty heart, and a MOUNTAIN OF BETRAYAL. So I sighed. AND THEN I SIGHED MORE. A woeful lullaby to mourn the missing biscuit.
Crisis Averted
Enough was enough and she felt it too. The chorus of my sighs eventually woke her. I could tell because she turned and looked at me with those guilty eyes again. This time though, she got up and ruffled my fur with a much more charged “hold on, buddy.”
Moments later, she was on the phone with The Hungry Puppy, placing an order for a fresh supply of my favorite Kong Stuff’N Ziggies, the ultimate bedtime treat. The solution was clear. Express delivery was summoned, rescuing us from the horrors of the forgotten biscuit.
You should have seen my reaction when that delivery arrived! My tail almost spun me off the ground. I was a blur of wagging joy and scramble of paws against the hardwood floors. And when she handed me that Ziggie, it was like discovering the secret to eternal happiness.
Forget buried bones and chasing after cats in the yard, my night was now packed with tantalizing flavor and an unforgettable crunch! I let out a happy sigh and curled up on my favorite bed. She was forgiven. The night was saved.
Crisis averted. Good-night treat restored. Dog no longer hates me (because let’s be honest, sleep without Ziggies is barely sleep at all.)
