Owner’s Perspective
Hide and seek — a fun pastime, a piece of innocent nostalgia from my childhood. Dogs love it too, right? One ordinary Saturday, I thought, ‘Hey, why not?’
That was my first mistake. The second came with my choice of hiding spot. It was my boxer, Rocky’s, favorite nap corner, under the stairs. I folded myself inside, closed my eyes, and breathed in the dusty quiet. It was cozy, dark, inviting. Except for the guilt. That was neither cozy nor inviting.
Now, every dog responds to guilt differently. Some will give you the puppy eyes (Rocky had mastered those by the way). Others might mope around, their tails a sad, forgotten droop. And some? Some dogs master the art of the Cold Shoulder. Rocky? He’s a shoulder artist.
I heard the patter of his paws, the worried whine. Then silence. Eventually, I unfolded from my hiding spot, victorious but not quite. There he was, sitting by his empty food bowl, ears flat, tail a silent witness to my betrayal. And those eyes. Those ‘how could you?’ eyes. I swear I heard my heart crack.
Rocky’s Roars
I was READY. I heard her count. She said ‘Go!’ I know Go. I know what happens next. TREATS.
I heard the steps. The smell. That was her, under the stairs, in my spot. MY SPOT. The nerve. I waited. And waited.
She came out, smiling. Smiling! CAN YOU BELIEVE IT? Smiling, as she occupied my space, as she won my game. She should be serving me dinner, not playing silly games.
Later, she found me by MY food bowl. She started the ‘Oh, buddy…’ talk. The Guilt Talk. It was too late. TOO LATE. My heart was breaking, and she was making noises.
Redemption: A Treat-filled Saga
The sight of Rocky sitting by his empty bowl was like kneeling on the Lego bricks of my regret. Every guilty memory churning in the pit of my stomach. The remedy? Treats. The place? The Hungry Puppy.
I reached for the car keys, “Alright, buddy, time to make things right.” The car ride was silent. But the golden arches of The Hungry Puppy appeared like a beacon of hope at the end of a long day of missteps. And never have bully sticks from The Hungry Puppy seemed so promising. A peace offering. My apology, wrapped in a mouthwatering, long-lasting chew that Rocky simply adores.
The reaction was as immediate as it was overwhelming. He perked up, sniffing the air, his tail vibrating with excitement. I unbuckled him, we stepped onto the grass, and I presented him with the bully stick. He jumped, he rolled, he pounced. And then he quietened. Crunching. Contemplating. Forgiving.
Crisis averted. Hide and Seek diplomacy failed but Bully Sticks triumphed. Dog no longer hates me (but major changes are coming to our game nights).
