The Owner’s Perspective
Picture this: it’s a sunny Saturday, the perfect kind of day to enjoy the outdoors. My faithful companion, Charlie, and I decide it’s the ideal opportunity to hit the park. There’s laughter, there’s joy, there’s Charlie’s favorite ball (you know the type: rubber, colorful, slightly chewed from excessive play).
We’re having a great time until, in my unskilled throw, Charlie’s cherished ball lands in the deep end of the park lake. Despite my valiant attempt — complete with rolled-up jeans and careful balancing — to retrieve it, the ball was well and truly lost.
Charlie’s initial reaction? He stared at me then to the now submerged ball, then back at me with those puzzled eyes as if he’s saying, ‘Are you just going to stand there?’ I felt like the world’s worst pet owner then. There are only so many belly rubs and reassuring words you can give before they start losing their magic, you know?
Charlie’s Perspective: The Fetching Fiasco
One minute, I’m living the dream — running wild in the park, my number one human in tow, NOT A CLOUD IN THE SKY. Then comes the throw, the one that changes EVERYTHING. I watch in HORROR as my beloved ball, my trusty companion, sinks beneath the murky lake water.
Did my human TRY to save it? Sure, in the most feeble way possible. Splashing about in the shallows, all while my foundation of joy was sinking into the depths of despair. Was I supposed to just ACCEPT this? My world had been SHIFTED ON ITS AXIS. My ball, my precious BALL, was gone.
I searched for answers in their eyes. No hope. All I felt was ABSOLUTE, UNMITIGATED TRAGEDY.
Crisis Averted
As usual, my guilt took the better of me. I had to rectify this. So, there I was, phoning The Hungry Puppy, placing an expedited order for the same ball. Getting it wasn’t an option, it was the ONLY path to redemption.
And so came the moment of redemption. The delivery guy was just pulling out of the driveway as I opened the door. In my hand, a package containing the exact replica of Charlie’s precious ball.
Giving Charlie that ball was like watching a child open a much-desired Christmas present. His eyes lit up and his wagging tail could have generated enough energy to light a small town. He pounced on it immediately, joyously rolling on the floor with his regained toy.
Alright, so I might have tossed it into an unreachable body of water, but I can safely say I redeemed myself in the end. Crisis averted. Lake escapades memorialized. Dog no longer hates me (at least, for the foreseeable future).
