My Dog Really Hates Me Because…

…The Curious Case of the Missing Playtime

Owner’s Perspective

It was a normal day. At least, that’s what I thought. Brisk morning walk, quality snuggle time, breakfast served – everything I considered a part of a delightful routine. Turned out, I missed a crucial part – playtime. Simply skipped it. Not intentionally, mind you, but because life happens, and, well, spreadsheets were calling (have you ever dealt with pivot tables before noon? Yes, compassion is appreciated).

Through all of that, I forgot playtime. I mean, I remembered lunch and belly rubs, but somehow, our conventional noon playtime involving a squeaky toy and some moderate running around was out of sight, out of mind. You see, tossing the toy haphazardly here and there, pretending it got lost, and my furry pal Daisy, rescuing it from oblivion – that’s our thing. But yesterday, it didn’t happen.

Daisy noticed. I saw that. I saw it in her eyes, those ‘I’ve been looking forward to it and you forgot’ eyes. She even brought her favorite green dinosaur toy to me, squeaked it thrice (usually it’s twice) but I was too buried in my work to notice. I know, excuses, excuses.

So, there we were at the end of the day. Me under the weight of guilt heavier than a bag of dog food, and Daisy with her tail down, periodically giving me the look and making her toy squeak. Pretty audible cues in the world of dog language, don’t you think?

Daisy’s Perspective: Neglect and a Green Dinosaur

You know the joy of anticipation? I LIVE FOR THAT. I wait for playtime. It is my TREAT, my joy, my HAPPY PLACE, my motivation to be the good girl. And yesterday, it didn’t happen. Can you believe it? MY OWN HUMAN FORGOT TO PLAY WITH ME.

My Green Dino, the legendary playtime initiator, was ignored. IGNORED. I made it squeak. Once, twice, even thrice. Nothing. No attention. No tug-of-war with the Green Dino. No running around.

Hello? HELLO? Who forgets playtime? I bet the squirrels at the park remember their playtime. I bet they don’t have such treacherous forgetful humans. Do I deserve this? AM I NOT A GOOD GIRL? Look at my shiny coat. Look at my fluffy tail. LOOK AT MY LOVABLE EYES.

I deserve my playtime. I deserve my squeaky Green Dino tug-war. I deserve my human’s attention. Not getting it, THIS HURTS. It’s betrayal. From today, silent treatment begins. Let the guilt consume her.

Redemption

The guilt did it. Daisy’s meaningful glances at me and her Green Dino was a wakeup call. It touched right in the feels. Guilt-laden, I grabbed my coat, and immediately made my way to The Hungry Puppy.

I knew what needed to be done. The peace offering had to be special. I decided to pick a brand-new, squeaky dinosaur toy – Green Dinosaur 2.0, if you will, a perfect addition to our daily playtime routine. The bonus this time? This dinosaur entertained Daisy even in my absence, with an internal squeaker that kept her engaged at play.

Upon returning, the reveal of the House of Pups Squeaky Dinosaur Toy marked the beginning of our extended, special make-up playtime. And can I tell you, the moment Daisy saw that toy, her tail wagged faster than a hummingbird’s wings. We played, we ran, we laughed. Classic, soul-refreshing playtime. Only better.

In the end, Daisy nestled near my feet, her new toy securely wedged under her paw, her tail thumping in satisfaction against the floor. And right then, I could see it. That contentment. I was forgiven, and all was right in the world once more.

Crisis averted. Playtime restored. Daisy’s faith reinstated. Dog no longer hates me (but I’ve put up 12 sticky notes around the house to never miss playtime again)
