My Dog Really Hates Me Because…

…The Great Burger Incident: How a Cookout Became a Canine Comedy

Owner’s Perspective

There are certain things one never expects to cause a pet crisis. We’re all familiar with forgetting a dog’s birthday, accidentally stepping on their tail in the middle of the night, or even the unforgivable sin of petting another dog. But I’m here to add a new item to the list. This tale begins with a family cookout, a perfect summer afternoon, and a tragically unsupervised burger.

Here’s the scene: We’re gathered in the backyard, sunshine, laughter, the smell of grilling burgers filling the air. I’m flipping burgers while patting myself on the back for grilling the juiciest, tastiest patties this side of New Jersey. In the midst of the revelry, though, I take my eyes off the grill for barely a moment. That’s all it takes for disaster to strike.

Just as I’m about to grab a burger for Bella, our Labrador Retriever, she makes her move. In an act of burger banditry that would make even the stealthiest of thieves blush, Bella jumps up, snags the burger straight from the grill, and proceeds to gulp it down. Surprised, I yell, “Bella, No!” But it’s far too late; the deed is eternally done.

In that moment, her woeful eyes meet mine. I swear I could almost hear Sarah McLachlan’s “In the Arms of The Angel” play softly in the background as she looked at me, the stolen but uneaten second burger still in her mouth. All I could muster was a defeated sigh.

Bella Takes the Stand

From MY perspective, this was THE DAY. A day that I, Bella, had dreamed of for ages. THE DAY OF THE BURGER. The delicious aromatics filled the backyard, wafting in through my open doggy door. My doggy senses tingled with heightened anticipation. I rehearsed my approach, my timing. All systems were GO.

As the DELIGHTFUL scent of GRILLED BURGER wafted into my nostrils, I knew. This was my MOMENT. With catlike precision (oh, the irony!), I lept, grabbed the glorious beef patty, and truly EMBRACED my carnivorous instincts. Truly, never before have I felt so ALIVE.

And then, it happened. The sound that sends chills down my canine spine. “Bella, No!” CRUSHING. SHATTERING. IMMEASURABLY HEARTBREAKING.

Do you see what you have done, HUMAN? You have turned one of the GREATEST moments of my doggy life into a TRAGEDY. This was MY BURGER. MY MOMENT OF TRIUMPH. And you, with a mere two words, tarnished it. How could you?

I fell into a silent protest. No barking. No tail wagging. Only the DRAMATIC SIGH of a dog who has tasted PARADISE only to have it RIPPED away. I would lie in my bed and stare at my emptied food bowl, dreaming of what could have been.

The Happily Ever After

After a full day of silent treatment and the most pitiful doggy eyes I’ve ever seen, my guilt got the best of me. Enough was enough.

“Alright, Bella,” I declared, grabbing my keys and phone. “Let’s fix this.” With a quick call to The Hungry Puppy, I placed an order. The mission: Redemption in the form of Sportsman’s Pride FieldMaster dog food – a formula packed full of real meat I knew she would love.

When I opened that bag of FieldMaster, Bella’s ears perked up. She trotted over, sniffed the air, and sat, her eyes never leaving the bag. As I filled her dish, her tail began to wag, faster and faster until it became a black blur. She practically inhaled the first helping, and when she’d finished, she gave me a long, loving stare, her tail still wagging at a slower, more content pace.

Crisis averted. Broken hamburger dreams repaired. Dog no longer hates me (unless there’s another cookout).
