The Owner’s Perspective
Sometimes a change is for the best, or at least, that’s what I hoped. I decided it was time for a backyard makeover. We needed to ditch the worn-out and threadbare grass in favor of some pebbles for easy maintenance. Little did I know that this would pave the path, quite literally, to Bruno’s rebellion.
The change in landscape seemed innocent enough. It was practical, budget-friendly, and, in theory, a dog-friendly solution. Plus, Bruno spends most of his time curled up on the porch anyway. The only bumpy part of the plan was the falling leaf problem, but no big deal. We got plenty of barriers and fences installed for that. “This will be easy,” I kept saying to myself as the trucks dumped ton after ton of little stones into our once green backyard.
Everything seemed fine until the first pile of displaced pebbles appeared. Bruno was nowhere to be found. I checked the entire house, the porch, his favorite spots…nothing. That’s when my heart skipped a beat. Looking at where the pebbles used to be, I saw a Bruno-sized tunnel. I should’ve seen it coming. My heart sank as I caught sight of his fluffy tail disappearing into the neighbor’s yard through the small hole in our fence.
Bruno’s Perspective
Things changed today. MY BACKYARD disappeared. REPLACED BY ROCKS. You got it right, they switched my beloved grassy heaven with pebbles – cold, hard, joyless pebbles! The INJUSTICE! Doesn’t my comfort matter? Don’t they know I love my grassy naps?
Was this a test? Was I supposed to just accept this dramatic alteration to my world? Shout a loud NO to such an inconsiderate decision, I say! After all, what is a dog without his favorite yard? A very, very sad dog. That’s what.
So, I decided to protest. Not with bark-offs or whining, but with a SILENT REVOLUTION. Was I annoyed? Yes. Would I let them know? NO. Let them figure it out on their own, I thought. Dogs have dug holes for centuries, but this wasn’t just a hole. OH NO! THIS WAS MY ESCAPE.
The Happy Ending
It was the sight of Bruno’s tail happily wagging from the neighbor’s lawn that made me realize my mistake. Right then, I knew I had to salvage this. I hopped in my car and headed straight for The Hungry Puppy.
In my desperation, I bought every grassy dog product they had – Grass-Fed Bully Sticks, a few packets of Stella & Chewy’s Grass-Fed Beef Dinner Patties, you name it. As an added treat and a peace offering, I picked up a Green Grass Mat thinking it may soothe his missing grass rage.
The moment I arrived home, Bruno popped his head out of his new hole, sniffing the air, tail swinging like a pendulum. I placed the Grass Mat in his favorite spot and spread out the treats on top. He squinted his eyes, tilted his head, and then sauntered towards me. The tension was too much. But then, the wag started, slow at first and then a full-blown WAGATHON.
Fluffball Bruno gave me ‘the eyes’ — those big, expressive eyes which screamed “Fine. You are forgiven. But DON’T mess with my grass again.” Though still a little sheepish, relief washed over me.
Crisis averted. Pebble disaster resolved. Dog no longer hates me (until the next home improvement project).
