Owner’s Perspective
So, it was a regular Sunday. Family time, sunny park walks, everything was going smoothly. But then, disaster (of the doggy variety) struck. You see, my husky, Max, has a particular soft spot for one thing, and no, it’s not gourmet peanut flavored biscuits or even fetching balls. It’s his beloved plush raccoon. He carries it everywhere, he sleeps with it, sometimes he even insists on having it on our walks. And suddenly, it occurred to me, when was the last time we washed that thing?
Practicing responsible pet parenting (and attempting to tackle the fading raccoon smell), I scooped up the plushie while Max was engrossed in his afternoon nap. Boom, in it went into the washer. I just knew I was being considerate. The raccoon would be fluffy, soft, and not smell faintly of old dog slobber. It was a win-win scenario! But, little did I know, the world’s fluffiest betrayal had just been committed.
I swear, the exact moment that washing machine buzzed, Max shot up, a picture of fluffy – albeit confused – alarm. Upon realizing his beloved companion was missing, his ears lowered, and his tail drooped. His bright eyes pinned me with an accusing glare. I could see the attempt to comprehend what had happened, paws thumping against the washing machine surface, and then at me.
On seeing the wet, soapy, and tragically battered raccoon, Max let out a whine that could shatter your heart. I, the culprit, the raccoon-napper, was left standing in a pool of guilt as Max sighed heavily and padded away, shooting me one last accusatory look.
Max’s Melodrama
I was betrayed. There, I said it. BETRAYED. My human, whom I have given all my love and barks, yesterday, committed the ultimate sin. She took away my beloved Raccoonie.
We were having the perfect Sunday. There were belly rubs, endless treats, and even a great walk! Then came nap time – my favorite part of the day, primarily because of Raccoonie-cuddles. I curl up on my favorite rug, Raccoonie clutched in my fluff, and drift off into the best dreams.
Suddenly, I was rudely awakened by a HORRID noise. It’s one I’ve heard before, but why now? Realizing my nap buddy was gone, I ran to the source of the sound. And there it was. My Raccoonie, soaked, spinning in that MONSTROUS machine. You should have seen his pitiful, drenched face! WHAT HAPPENED TO NAPTIME?
I whined. I whimpered. I sent my human THE EYES: the “I trusted you,” the “How could you?” and the “Where-is-Raccoonie?” eyes. And do you know what happened next? NOTHING. I padded off to my bed—alone, Raccoonie-less, and HEARTBROKEN.
Restoring the Peace
One look at my sad fluffball was enough. I couldn’t take it. Not the image of his droopy ears, or his heavy sighs, or the way he kept glancing at the still humming washing machine.
I grabbed my keys and was out the door. Destination: The Hungry Puppy. Solution: A new raccoon plushie. A visit to the store sent me straight to the toy aisle, home to a variety of plushies. Among them, a raccoon, nearly identical to Max’s beloved Raccoonie. I bought it, praying this one could play stand-in until the original was dry and fluffy again.
Walking through our front door, I cautiously presented the new raccoon to Max. His bright blue eyes met mine, then the plushie, then me again. His tail started wagging, slow at first then picking up speed. He gently accepted his new nap buddy, running his snout over it, and promptly curling up on his rug. The new raccoon now clutched in his paws, Max’s eyes drifted closed. Relief washed over me as I watched his peaceful slumber.
Crisis averted. Nap time saved. Dog no longer hates me (but laundry day might be postponed for a while).
