My Dog Really Hates Me Because…

…The Betrayal of the Stolen Squeaky Toy

Owner’s Perspective

It was a day like any other. Blue skies. Birds singing. The sun shining. Until I committed the ultimate doggy transgression without even knowing it.

You see, Charlie, my boisterous bulldog, has this squeaky toy — a bright red, fire hydrant-shaped piece of rubber that emits the most ear-piercing squeaks known to mankind. A toy he never gets tired of (unfortunately). Now, I never touched Charlie’s toys before, but this squeaker… it needed a timeout. Just an hour — so that I can catch up on this great novel (in peace), I thought. Nothing harmful, right?

So, while Charlie was outside doing his business, I swiped the toy from its spot in his bed and stowed it in the kitchen cabinet. Clever? Yes. Cruel? I didn’t think so at the time.

When Charlie came back in, his eyes darted to the empty space on his bed. His eyebrows knitted as if to say, “Something is missing here.” He sniffed around, nudged his dog blanket with his nose, then looked up at me.

His eyes said it all — the very emblem of the word ‘betrayed’. The squeak tease, it seemed, was on another level.

Charlie’s Conundrum

I KNOW MY TOYS. I’ve counted them. I’ve arranged them. My red hydrant squeaky toy…missing. GONE. LIFTED. I smelled a rat, or, rather, an OWNER.

My immediate thought: THIEF. MY TOY IS STOLEN. I searched high and low, my tail no longer wagging. My ears drooped. My heart, HEAVY.

This wasn’t an accident. No, this was a CRIME. A CRIME AGAINST CANINE KIND. And the culprit? Cheating right under my snout. Wrapping me in pats and ‘good boy’ praises. As if that could hide the SHOCKING REALITY.

She hid my squeaky toy — the source of my joy, my entertainment, my RELEASE.

I GLARED at her. I let out IMPOSSIBLE SIGHs. I made her NOTICE MY SUFFERING.

The Happy Ending

I couldn’t stand it. Those puppy eyes boring into me as Charlie mournfully nosed through his toy-less bed, his silent protest in the form of exaggerated sighs. My heart pounded with guilt.

Enough was enough. I dashed into the kitchen and lifted the cabinet, my hands reaching for that accursed, but suddenly very prized, squeaky toy. Charlie’s ears perked up. His eyes widened in anticipation.

When I saw that tail wag, even before I returned the toy — that’s when I knew. No expensive toy could replace the joy that little red hydrant brought to my Charlie. I let the toy loose, and the room erupted with the most beautiful (yes, I said that) high-pitched squeaks, Charlie prancing around in glee.

I stood there, watching my bulldog, destroying that squeaky toy with such gusto, sending shockwaves of shrill squeaks in every corner of the house. And you know what? It was pure, uproarious music to my ears.

Crisis averted. Squeaky toy victorious. Dog no longer hates me (unless I commit another robbery).
