Owner’s Perspective
Have you ever, under the guise of doing something good, committed an act so unforgivable that you question your sanity? Yeah, that’s what I thought. Me too. Let me tell you about the day I replaced Max’s favorite ball, which to him, was the indisputable ruler of all toys. The holy grail of fetch.
I mean, this ball was falling apart. It had more teeth marks than a chew toy and looked like it had been through a war. I wanted to give Max something better (newer). Something without the grimy residue of countless slobbery retrievals embedded in the fabric. I thought he would appreciate the gesture.
So, at the store, I picked out a top-of-the-line, super-bouncy neon ball (I thought Max would love the color). With the new ball in tow, I got home and ceremoniously presented it to Max. His reaction was not what I expected, not at all. He stared at the ball, then at me, his tail stock-still.
Instead of excitement, there was a freeze-frame of disbelief in his eyes before he slowly turned and walked away. No excited barks, no wagging tail, no pretzel-like contortions of joy. Just a slow, dejected traipse to the corner of his den with a glance back that screamed, “How could you?”
Max’s Take on Things
BALL? Sure, she said BALL, and my ears perked. I was SMILING, wagging, showing her I was READY.
But what she handed me was NOT my ball. NOT EVEN CLOSE. I’d know that ball anywhere – I’ve bit, chewed, and fetched it a MILLION TIMES. This, THIS impersonator – too smooth, too round, too NEW – THIS was not IT.
I looked back at her, silent stare unbroken. Can she not see the DIFFERENCE? Do I need to FETCH the old one for her to COMPARE?
I shook my head and walked away, too insulted to interact further. FEELINGS hurt with disappointment?! You bet. DRAMATICARD kicked in, I buried my face into my paw and sighed, loudly so. Maybe, just maybe, drama will cause her to reconsider!
How Peace Was Restored
Staring at Max’s overwhelmed reaction – the profound silence, the hurt eyes – I couldn’t bear it anymore.
With an apologetic smile, I grabbed my keys and made a beeline to The Hungry Puppy. There, in the endless aisle of KONGs and squeaky toys, I found it – the exact replacement of Max’s beloved ball, just a bit cleaner. The same weight, the same not-too-loud squeak when squished.
The moment I handed the new-old ball to Max was magic. His ears perked, his tail started waving like a flag in the wind, and the enthusiastic bark I missed was back. Max was himself again.
He went to town with that ball right away, tossing it into the air and pouncing on it with gusto. Normality restored, the crisis was over, and forgiveness received in the form of a paw on my knee, a licked hand, and the old, happy Max whom I loved.
Crisis averted. Fetch resumes. Dog no longer hates me (until the next toy swap).
