Owner’s Perspective
I just pulled off my socks after a long day at work, leaving them on the floor. Just there. Where they landed. No harm in it, you might think. But you haven’t met my golden retriever, Bella, who regards my post-work routine with the passion of a Broadway critic. Yesterday, she gave me a standing ovation when I changed into her favorite dog-themed sweatshirt. Today, though, as the sock hit the floor, she just looked at me. Then at the sock. Then back at me. And the great betrayal had begun.
You might not know it, but there’s an unwritten rule: socks belong in Bella’s basket. It’s some sort of sacred voodoo for her. I usually play along. A tossed sock becomes a grand fetch game. It’s fun (and also helps with my laundry). But sometimes you just want to kick off your shoes and collapse on the couch, right? Well, wrong, according to Bella.
As the offending sock lay there, Bella threw herself onto her designated guilt-inducing spot and gave an Oscar-worthy performance of a heartbroken damsel. Ears down. Sad eyes. The little sniff, like the world was ending. And the heart-wrenching sigh. Boy, that golden girl knows how to guilt trip.
Bella Gives Her Account of Events
THE SOCK. He dropped THE SOCK. Just like that. Without a second thought. It’s not that I’m overly attached. Okay maybe a tad, but that’s not the point! The sock has a place. THE BASKET. Clear rules. It’s a game we play; every day, no exceptions. Why today? Why did he have to change the RULES?
I was waiting for that moment. There’s a rhythm to his walk when he comes in, then the jacket, the shoes, and then THE SOCK. And I’m there. Waiting. But today… Straight to the couch. FLOpped down like a sack of wet kibble.
THE WORLD STOPPED. The sock lay on the ground, discarded, lonely. I couldn’t bear to look. Turning away, I took refuge in my spot. My heart sinking. An unfathomable betrayal on a Tuesday evening. How could my faithful human do this to me?
Turning the Sock Tide
I should have known. The Golden Guild, notoriously dramatic, but that much? I just couldn’t take it anymore. She was looking at me from her corner bed, with those sad eyes, drooping tail, and…the sigh. Oh, the sigh. Pulling myself from the couch, I grabbed the sock and made my way to her.
Laughing at my own folly, I picked up my phone and dialed The Hungry Puppy. Yes, even a sock offense requires a gourmet reconciliation. The best way to turn the sock tide? A bag of Stella & Chewy’s Moonlit Mixer freeze-dried raw treats, of course.
The minute I opened the bag, Bella perked up. The whiff of the delicious, freeze-dried raw goodness hit her senses. As I tossed her the first treat, she dashed for it with glee, crunching away with joy in her eyes. With a wagging tail and a happy sigh, Bella leaned against me, crunching happily on her treats. A peace treaty signed, sealed, and delivered with freeze-dried raw treats.
Crisis averted. Sock incident peacefully resolved. Dog no longer hates me (though sock may never forgive me)
