My Dog Really Hates Me Because…

…The Treacherous Leap Year Fiasco

Owner’s Perspective
As my dear golden retriever, Bella’s birthday was approaching, I was excited. Homemade dog cake? Check. Goofy party hat? Check. Special leap year birthday? Checkmate. That was my plan, at least. Then, like every fallible human being wrapped up in their own lives, I forgot the peculiarity of a leap year.

Estimating that the 29th of February would magically appear, I planned everything to go down on that date (Bella’s actual birthday). I mean, it hadn’t failed me since she was a puppy, right? And where did that land me? On a non-existent date, in a whole lot of doggy drama.

The morning of the 28th, I walked into the kitchen and froze. Bella was sitting on the living room rug, her big, brown eyes locked on mine, reflecting the sad realization that I had forgotten her special day. She whimpered, her fluffy tail motionless between her legs, as she glanced dolefully at the empty spot beside her cake-shaped toy. The enormity of my error rushed into me like an unwelcome gust of wind.

Bella’s Perspective
It was my birthday. I had been waiting for it, my tail wagging impatiently every time I saw him checking that funky paper with blocks and numbers on the fridge. I even did the math, 3 dog years = 1 human year; VOILA, I’m four! I even chose a spot for my CAKE! But then, the BETRAYAL.

I woke up, tail wagging and eyes sparkling with anticipation. Breakfast was ordinary kibble, not the SPECIAL birthday breakfast I usually get. Then, the walk, the belly rubs, everything was REGULAR. I double-checked the position of the sun, sniffed the air for the distinct “seasonal” smells I affiliate with my birthday. All systems indicated it was THE DAY, yet no acknowledgement!

The disappointment soaked into my bones, a betrayal cold as winter. He forgot. My own human forgot my BIRTHDAY. With every passing hour, my joy ebbed away. By evening, I had lost all hope. I offered him my saddest puppy eyes, letting out heartbroken whimpers for good measure, but all he gave me was a pat and a “we’ll play tomorrow, Bella”. TOMORROW? It was my birthday TODAY!

Crisis Averted
Staring into Bella’s sad eyes, I knew I had messed up. Realizing it was either act now or live in a state of perpetual guilt, I grabbed my keys, pulled on my shoes, and drove to The Hungry Puppy.

Entering the store, I knew I had come to the right place. Heading straight to the treat aisle, I selected Bella’s favorite: Stella & Chewy’s freeze-dried raw dinner patties. High in proteins and all the healthy stuff Bella needs, they would serve as the perfect apology.

Racing back home, I presented Bella with her birthday offering. The moment I opened the package, Bella’s demeanor changed. Her tail started wagging furiously, ears erect, eyes shining with anticipation. A single patty held above her had her delivering the most earnest sit I’d ever seen.

Bella forgave me instantaneously, devouring her Freeze-Dried Patties with gusto, her tail never ceasing its happy wag. She even brought I her favourite chew toy, offering me a chance at redemption through play. With our small birthday celebration back on track, peace was finally restored.

Crisis averted. Bella’s birthday saved in the nick of time. Dog no longer hates me (and I’ve set a reminder to always check if it’s a leap year).
