Owner’s Perspective
In my defense, it was a Monday. Work felt like it lasted a lifetime, and by the time I got home, I felt like I’d run a marathon (okay, fine, a half marathon). I thought—hoped rather—that Max (my loyal four-legged friend) would cut me some slack. I mean, we humans get worn out too sometimes, don’t we?
I plopped down on the sofa and flicked on the TV, hoping for something mind-numbing to chill out to. Max trotted in the room, a brief moment of confusion flickering across his face. He then looked towards the door, then at his leash, then back at me. No, not this evening, Max. Please, not this evening.
That’s when it happened. Max sheepishly dropped his favorite green tennis ball from his mouth and pushed it towards me with his snout. He looked at me with those “you know what time is it, right?” eyes. My heart sank — I’d unknowingly neglected our daily routine of evening fetch.
Max’s Misgivings
I prepared ALL day. I napped just right. Conserved my energy. Woke up in time. I was READY.
Usually, the moment THE SHOE comes off, it’s go-time. We head to the park. THE BALL is thrown. I chase it. That’s the drill. It’s NOT complicated. Simple. Regular. Dependable.
But today… today something happened. THE SHOE came off. And then… nothing. SHE sat down. Turned on THAT BOX which usually follows dinner. The one I can’t eat.
This is not what I prepared for. I had one job — to fetch THE BALL. And she, she had one job too — to throw THE BALL. But today, she didn’t. THE BETRAYAL! I attempted to guilt trip her, placing THE BALL at her feet. But all I received in return was a painful “not today, Max.”
The Great Make-Up
How Peace Was Restored
Night came. I’d already resolved to sleeping with the hurt of betrayal when I heard a jingle. My ears perked up. SHE grabbed the keys. Could it be? Was she?
Next thing, we were at The Hungry Puppy. SHE picked up a KONG Classic dog toy. I won’t lie, I was intrigued. It seemed like an acceptable apology. Suddenly, I found myself momentarily forgiving her of the day’s neglect.
When we got home, she filled it with peanut butter — my favorite! As I licked the toy, all the anger I had held for the day melted away, to be replaced with peanut-butter-filled ecstasy.
Apology accepted. Betrayal forgiven. All thanks to peanut butter.
Crisis averted. Fetch game replaced. Dog no longer hates me (at least until next Monday)
