Owner’s Perspective
You know how it is when you’re a cat owner who also happens to have a dog. Mutual arrangement, right? That’s what I thought. That’s what I consoled myself with, when I saw those mournful brown eyes looking at me from the couch. “It’s just for a day,” I reassured Buster. I had to pet-sit my neighbor’s Maine Coon, Princess Fluffytail, for a day. How bad could it be?
Let’s just say, I underestimated the canine nose. When I returned home, Buster met me at the door, as enthusiastic as ever. The moment I reached out to pet him, though, his nose twitched. He sniffed me once, twice, then withdrew abruptly, ears flat, tail down. His look was unmistakable: pure betrayal. And then he walked away, his usual happy hello completely abandoned. Can you imagine that? After only a few hours, I smelled like a traitor.
Buster didn’t look at me for the rest of the evening. His toys lay untouched. His dinner, uneaten. He laid on his bed, looking forlorn and miserable. (And here I was, thinking dogs didn’t hold grudges.)
Buster’s Bitter Brouhaha
I am a DOG. A loyal, steadfast, tail-wagging DOG. Not a cat. I don’t meander around feigning indifference. I don’t have a taste for fish, and I CERTAINLY do NOT enjoy the smell of cats. But today, he dared. He SMELLED LIKE A CAT.
I saw him leave in the morning. There were no early signs of betrayal. I waited, like a good boy, for his return. I was READY to greet him, like I do every day.
BUT THEN. The smell hit me before he even opened the door fully. The absurd, grating perfume of… feline. In my territory. ON HIM. The audacity!
I don’t know what got into him. Had I not been a good dog? Was my wagging tail and slobbery kisses not enough? I pondered this from the safe distance of my bed while he tried to apologize. HA! The nerve.
How Peace Was Restored
As night fell, I couldn’t bear the silence anymore. Buster’s moody silence was echoing through the house. I needed to fix this. I couldn’t let him sulk any longer. So, I did the only logical thing: I grabbed my keys and drove straight to The Hungry Puppy.
I knew what I needed: Sportsman’s Pride FieldMaster dog food — a gesture to show Buster that food and scent-wise, he was my priority. I could only hope it would be enough to earn back his trust.
When I got home, I opened the fresh bag right there in the foyer. The rich aroma filled the house. And then I saw it. The twitch of Buster’s nose. He lifted his head from his bed and sniffed the air. He rose, tentatively at first, then with growing excitement. His tail started wagging as he sprinted towards me, forgetting all about my treasonous stench.
I fed him the Sportsman’s Pride FieldMaster right there and then. He munched happily, occasionally pausing to nuzzle up against me. By the time he finished his meal, he had fully forgiven me, his eyes gleaming with happiness once again.
Crisis averted. Feline fiasco forgotten. Dog no longer hates me (until the next cat-sitting appointment).
