Owner’s Perspective
You see, I had the bright idea of using cheese cubes as training treats for Cooper. I thought it was brilliant (it’s healthy, economical, and, let’s face it, who doesn’t love cheese?). I swore my husband to secrecy—we couldn’t let Cooper know that his precious treats came from our dinner table, not the pet store shelf. I even went as far as to hide the cubes in a commercial treat bag. We were set (queue the spy music).
But thing is, dogs aren’t as easy to fool as you might think (or, maybe Cooper’s just smarter than your average beagle). He watched as I generously tossed him a piece of cheese, saying, “Good boy.” His ears pricked up, tail wagging. Until he saw me nibble on a piece myself. The tail stopped wagging. His eyes narrowed. (Get the dramatic music ready).
You know the look, right? It was as if I’d betrayed him in the worst possible way. It screamed: “Wait, we’re eating the same thing? Is this a JOKE to you?” His eyes were filled with disbelief and… betrayal. Once again, there I was, guilty as charged, caught in the act of leading a double life. What kind of a monster gives their dog human food as dog treats?
Cooper’s Conundrums
ANYONE ELSE FEELING CHEATED? I mean, I was enjoying my training sessions. THOSE CHEESE CUBES WERE DELICIOUS. But then SHE CHEATED. She took a bite out of MY cheese cube, and it all made sense.
I’m not just a dog. I’m a CHEESE EATING DOG. I am unique. SPECIAL. My treats should reflect that. Instead, my owner tried to trick me with regular human food! Does this mean all my training has been a LIE? All those ‘good boy’ comments, were they just to get me eat CHEESE??
The betrayal stung. It felt like being caught in a deluge of fake treats! I decided to protest—I turned my back to her, my tail rigid. If she thought things were going to be the same after this debacle… well, she needed a wake-up call!
Redemption
Crisis Averted
What’s worse than a dog who feels betrayed? A dog who refuses to make eye contact. I realized my mistake—I’d underestimated Cooper’s intelligence, his keen sense of observation. I had to do something.
Grabbing the keys from the hook, I told Cooper, “Alright boy, let’s fix this.” His ears perked up. Hope wasn’t lost, not yet.
With Cooper in tow, we made our way to The Hungry Puppy. I decided to buy the tastiest, most expensive treats I could find: Primal Freeze-Dried Raw Chicken Shredders—a premium treat for a premium dog.
Back home, facing a still sulking Cooper, I dreaded his reaction. I showed him the brand-new treat, offered him a piece. He sniffed it, then looked at me—still skeptical, yet hopeful. He took a cautious bite and his tail started wagging. Cooper sprung to his feet, eyes gleaming with delight.
All of a sudden, it was as if the cheese incident was forgotten. He was a happy dog again, his faith in humanity restored by a simple treat. Tail wagging, he leaped onto my lap, licking my face in gratitude. In that moment, I knew, once again, I was his favorite person in the world.
Crisis averted. Cheese banished. Dog no longer hates me (though he’s still wary of dairy).
