Owner’s Perspective
It all started as an innocent mistake. I woke up late (I’d been binge-watching my favorite show until the wee hours) and my schedule was already behind. I glanced at my alarm clock, glanced at my loyal companion, Max, then hesitantly glanced at the leash hanging by the door. “Just one morning,” I told myself. “He’ll be fine. It’s a small break,” I said, convincing no one.
I mean, Max is a good sport, generally taking life’s curveballs with the grace of a patient hound. I figured he wouldn’t mind that much (famous last words). Max’s reaction, however, shattered my naive assumption. His ears flattened, his tail drooped and those eyes – you know the eyes – those puppy dog eyes of betrayal locked onto me. It was like telling a kid his trip to Disneyland was canceled because you’re not feeling it.
By mid-morning, the guilt had fully set in. Every sigh from Max trebled my guilt. Every glance toward his leash was a pang of contrition. “Just one day,” I had reasoned. “Well, Max didn’t sign up for this deal,” his eyes seemed to retort.
Max’s Epic Sulk
Max, here. I need to set the record straight because, clearly, the gravity of this situation isn’t fully understood. You see, mornings mean WALKIES. It’s a big deal. HUGE, in fact. I’m talking tail-wagging, ear-perking, let’s-do-this level excitement! It’s my daily routine, my raison d’être, my moment of Zen and random-neighborhood-sniffing all rolled into one brilliant adventure. WALKIES is not just casual morning jaunt. It’s THE EVENT of the day.
But fate, it seems, was unkind that morning. I heard the alarm clock, prepared to put on my adorable “let’s go for the walkies” face, and what happened? She said, “Not today, Max.” I mean, EXCUSE ME? Since when was WALKIES optional? It’s like the canine constitution – “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all dogs are entitled to WALKIES and the pursuit of squirrels.”
The silent treatment that ensued was not petty, it was NECESSARY. An act of canine resistance. I’d go lie on my favorite rug and sigh loudly every few minutes. Drama? You betcha. But sometimes you have to make a stand… or a lie down, with sighing.
Crisis Averted
That’s when it happened. My human, noticing my dramatic sighs and my non-stop stare at the leash, mustered up her conscience. “Alright, Max. Let’s go fix this,” she said, reaching for the leash.
But it wasn’t just any old walk. Oh no, she went all out. We didn’t go on our regular route– no, we went to my favorite park. Yes, that one with all the squirrels and that doggy obstacle course that I absolutely love.
And even better, when we arrived at the park, she pulled out a brand-new, squeaky ball from the range of Kong toys she’d discovered at The Hungry Puppy. I could not believe it. A NEW BALL! The squeaky symphony was just spot on, perfect!
The moment that red, squeaky piece of joy bounced before me was pure bliss. I forgot about the walkies fiasco and immersed myself in the game of fetch that ensued. My human was forgiven, the day was redeemed, and all it took was a new toy from The Hungry Puppy and my favorite park.
Crisis averted. Outdoor joy restored. Dog no longer hates me (and I’ve learned not to trifle with the sacred tradition of walkies).
