My Dog Really Hates Me Because…

…My Dog’s Christmas Carol: The Holiday Betrayal

Owner’s Perspective

I thought I had it all figured out. I had that spark of an idea. You know the one — that seemingly magical solution that would solve all problems? I would just get a faux fur blanket, one that would match Simba’s golden hair, for his Christmas present. It seemed foolproof.

It’s winter after all and he would appreciate the extra warmth, I thought. It was practical, stylish, and well within my budget. So, off I went, feeling smug about my impeccable gift-giving prowess.

The look on Simba’s face when I placed the gift under the tree was pure heightened anticipation. Every doggy eyebrow raise and wagging tail was a love note written in hope and trust. He probably thought it was one of those giant bones from The Hungry Puppy. But then he sniffed his present, ears perked, tail suddenly still.

The horror in his eyes was clear. The blanket was not appreciated. “But it even matches your fur,” I tried to explain, holding up the furry rectangle. His sighs echoed around the room in disapproval. It was a betrayal that would forever live in infamy.

Simba’s Sage Words

It was CHRISTMAS. I had been good all year. Chase squirrels, protect humans, be the best dog I could be. Besides the occasional shoe-chewing incidents, I totally deserved a ^10/10 treat. I’d even learned to behave at the dog park.

When the box appeared under the tree, I was on cloud nine. It smelt new. Exciting. The sheer size of it got my tail wagging into hyperdrive. It had to be that giant bone from The Hungry Puppy. It HAD to be.

But then the reveal. THE BLANKET. A blanket? Excuse me, SINCE WHEN is a blanket a suitable Christmas gift for a dog who’s been a ^10/10 good boy all year? I’ve seen those majestic bone treats she brings from The Hungry Puppy. I DESERVED one.

And to top it off, she said it matches my fur. MY FUR. I’m not some fashion-forward Yorkie, I’m a Labrador. An adventurer!

Crisis Averted

The silent treatment worked its charm. Within three days of the “blanket fiasco,” I caught her browsing the treat section’s Christmas specials on The Hungry Puppy’s website. Redemption was on its way.

A quick run to The Hungry Puppy and a purchase later, she was home with a shiny new bag of freeze-dried lamb liver treats — my absolute favorite. The minute she opened the bag, my senses went into overdrive. The intoxicating aroma enveloped me, resetting every wrong that had previously been committed.

I jumped up to receive my gift — the treat was heavenly, a crunchy delight that seemed to apologize with every bite. I forgave her instantly. It might not have been the giant bone, but it was an acceptable apology.

Crisis averted. Blanket forgiven. Dog no longer hates me (though she’s still on thin ice).
