The Owner’s Side

Trust me, this one was a mistake that came out of left field. I mean, how was I supposed to know that my gym workout would cause a full-blown betrayal? It started harmless enough, with me picking up my skipping rope in an attempt to sneak in some cardio on a rainy day. (If you saw how out-of-kilter my current apple-related, waistline situation is, you’d understand.)

So there I was, parkouring my way through my living room (most of it is dodging my toddler’s rogue LEGO blocks and navigating the treacherous landmines of half-chewed dog toys). And please, do me a favor; don’t imagine some stellar athletic performance. Think more ‘barely evading cardiac arrest while tripping over the furniture.’

Then I stepped on it. The red squeaky toy. The pinnacle of Charlie’s toy collection and, without hesitation, I skidded across our hardwood floor, an Olympic class performance if there ever was one. The half-chewed rubber chicken came to its sad end under my chaotic pirouette.

Charlie has been sulking ever since. The usual tail-wagging at my return was replaced by an occasional flick of the tail and a loud sigh filled the room.

Charlie’s Canine Commentary

The day was going as expected. BREAKFAST. CHECK. MORNING WALK. CHECK. Between you and me, I was expecting a TREAT, but sadly, that didn’t happen. Anyway, we were good till this point. You know, the usual.

But then the UNFORGIVABLE…

She stepped on ‘Mr. Clucks.’ Mr. Clucks, for the uninitiated, is my most cherished toy. My reliable afternoon companion, whose squeak echoed the very sentiments of my loyal heart. And it was reduced to a muffled squelch followed by an eerie silence.

I watched in HORROR as Mr. Clucks bore the brunt of the careless stomp. I mean EXCUSE ME? There was no warning, no apology, just a little giggle (insult to injury really!)

Every time I passed her after that, I made sure she heard my deepest, most sorrowful sigh. Ears drooping, I nestled by Mr. Clucks, mourning our loss. My trust, shattered, just like Mr. Clucks’ squeaker.

The Happy Ending

Two days into our silent brooding, I couldn’t take it. Throwing caution to the wind (making sure to dodge more rogue toys this time), I braved the rain. Half the town is asleep at 9 PM, but here I was, driving down the slick, wet roads to The Hungry Puppy. And let me tell you, they take their term ‘Express Delivery’ quite seriously.

Browsing through their aisle of dog toys, Buster Toys, I found a skipping rope dog toy. Yes, you heard it right. A two-in-one. Cardio and retribution in one swoop!

I was hesitant when I returned home, twirling that rope in my hands, but Charlie’s reaction made it worthwhile. His ears perked up instantly, curiosity replacing his lethargic slump. The moment he realized it was a skipping-rope-toy combo, his tail was wagging like his life depended on it.

Crisis averted. Mr. Clucks reincarnated. Dog no longer hates me (till he realizes the whole skipping rope part).
